Rivendell Bike Works: "Black Reparations Pricing"
Black Reparations Pricing (BRP)—Why Now, How It'll Work, and How You Can Play, Too
I wonder if CA Governor Gavin Newsom will designate RBW as the official alternative-transportation company for his new reparations task force.

Thanks. Shared to FB. There are many ways to do this, including team sponsorship, education and business incentives. The concept is often misunderstood and misrepresented.

Good for him for doing this. But frankly anyone rich enough to afford his custom bikes, is not going to need that reparation.
It would be more beneficial if they fixed up old bikes and donated them to poor urban kids and youths.

Thats a significant discount. And the formulas for pricing and inventory are interesting. I wonder how they came up with 10% of frames.
Seems like a less than efficient way to change things, but its their plan so I guess I hope it works. Hopefully it isnt a marketing ploy.
I wonder if the money they would have otherwise collected could have been applied in a more direct way to help local racial or cultural minorities.
Reparations has never been synonymous with Rivendell to me,, but whatever works, I guess.

I'm not arguing over Riv's policy, one way or the other. But I will point out that race-based pricing has been going on in many markets for a very long time. The difference is that, this time, black people are getting the lower prices.

So preferential treatment based on race alone isn't racist? Well, I suppose it would be if it was a discount only given to a white person. I always thought I wanted a Rivendell until now. I will rejoice to see them go under.

Does Rivendell have a history that goes back far enough that they have to make reparations for their past?

I suspect that they made an estimate of the demand for the program (10%) and looked at profit margins and came to the conclusion that they could afford a 45% discount on 10% of each model without cutting into their bottom line more than they felt they could afford. It is a very targeted program, and we can argue all we want about whether the money would be better used in another way, but this is what they are choosing to do and it's not my place to tell them how to spend their money.
Its not your place to tell them how to spend their money, but this is a forum where cycling news is discussed, and that inherently requires opinions. The most common of which would be is a decision good or bad.

Grant Petersen has found another/new way of irritating some people.
If people are irritated by this, why do they care?

Makes me think of people in the market for a Mercedes S-Class vs. people in the market for a Toyota Corolla.
