Shimano SM-PM40 Power Modulator?

Hello everyone,

Just received my new bike and have a question concerning a part I've never seen before.

Just above the front v-brake, there's a small cylinder (Shimano SM-PM40) with the brake line passing though it. What does this do exactly?

Thanks!
Telly

It's spring-loaded and is intended to make your brakes spongy and ineffective-- WAIT, no, the script says it helps you avoid applying excessive front brake force and flinging yourself over the handlebars. Yeah, that.

The day I manage to fling myself over the handlebars from excessive use of the front brake (Clydesdale here), I'll be a happy bloke!

Another little trinket that sounds cool, makes things worse, and adds more parts to break down during a ride... that's gone!

Thanks mechBgon

It's one of those bass-ackward logic items added to avoid law suits. When v-brakes started to go on more utility-minded bikes there was a spate of people going OTB due to not being aware of the braking power available. Removing some braking power was a more reliable way of avoiding accidents than telling people to brace their arms before braking hard.

Those accidents still occur every now and then, regularly followed by people blaming the bike, and the brake.

I don't get it, twisting the bar too sharply will send you tumbling just as well, and I don't see any steering dampers being added.

That problem was solved by the bicycle helmet. When going over the bars, most people had enough time to get an arm out and too many collarbones were breaking hence the need for the power modulator. It all makes perfect sense really.

Where's the kaboom? There was supposed to be an Earth-shattering kaboom.

Poor Shimano, when they do dumb things they get called out.

Compare this to Campagnolo's providing paired brakes with the rear having less leverage and claiming it improves modulation, and helps prevent rear wheel lockup. Folks say "gee, what a great idea".

The irony is that Shimano's gadget is intended for newbie's and casual riders who can be expected to be unskilled, whereas Campagnolo's is intended for serious riders who should be expected to know how to modualte braking for either wheel correctly.

I guess it's all in the presentation.
