Amazing. Does the guy actually pour oil into the steerer tube though?! I would lose it if that were any of my bikes if so.

And the point is? The bit isn’t particularly funny and without a reveal seems kind of cruel. Even with a reveal, it wouldn’t be all that funny. We aren’t laughing with the guy but at his ignorance.

It's the Carbonaro Effect show. I can watch a few episodes for mild entertainment before I move on to something else.

Exactly. I watched Candid Camera for the same reason I've watched the Carbonaro Effect. A nice way to pass some time when I needed to take a breather, from whatever.

I get Candid Camera but never really liked the premise. The copies of that program have never really improved it much. Leaving someone to look for a nonexistent item for 5 minutes without clueing them in on the joke is unnecessarily cruel. It’s not a “joke” at that point.

I agree with cyccommute, Candid Camera, Carbonaro and others of that ilk are unnecessarily cruel. They are funny as long as YOU aren't the victim.

The other potential problem with Carbonaro's "joke" is the potential for fraud. He (or one of his imitators) could have easily charged his customer for completely bogus service and never let him in on the joke. Auto mechanics, appliance service people, etc. do it all the time.

The "victims" in the video clips sign off their approval after filming, otherwise it wouldn't be aired. Anyone else in the scene not central to the prank usually don't sign off (probably aren't asked to) and are therefore blurred out.

So, the "victims" that make it to a public "broadcast" have either a good sense of humor, or want to be on "TV", or . . .

I'd have to agree with the both of you. I understand what he's trying to go for here but I find it painful to watch. I remember when I first heard about him and watched one of his videos; I think I got about 30 seconds into it and turned if off.

Obviously staged but what do you expect from "tru" TV? If it were true, they'd call it True TV. Re: "political correctness" and every other qualified deceit.

...you can't post stuff like that on this particular forum without evoking "political correctness", "virtue signalling", and "car mechanics will rip you off" responses. It's a limitation of the locale.

Just to make this thread more interesting...Allen Funt of Candid Camera fame was on a flight that got hijacked to Cuba and a few passengers recognizing Mr. Funt thought it was a prank for his show. Unfortunately, it was not . https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/ca...era-hijacking/

Well, this has been interesting. I posted this with the intent of giving everyone a chuckle. Never dreamed it would get some of these reactions.
I love a good sport, which this guy clearly was. They did not show the part where they reveal the gag, and I wish they had. As mentioned before, a release must be signed before a video like that can be made public, so we have to assume that the "victim" is on board with it. Watching him struggle between what he thinks or believes, and what his senses are clearly showing him makes the audience sympathize.
I'm not really a fan of videos like the booby trapped bike that invites would be thieves to hop aboard and pedal off, only to have the bike reach the end of a tether and throw the rider arse over apple cart, but I'm quite sure most of those are staged with stunt men.
I see a video like the one I posted and wonder, why didn't I think of that, but then again, I could never pull it off like this guy did.

Now, do you need to wear a helmet when chaining your bike oil? Can you substitute chain lube for the vegetable oil, and if so, what kind?
