Yes. That's it.

Typically, the bike computer with a separate cadence sensor will use a magnet that you attach to one crank arm. Same concept as what you've described.

Yes.

When I was racing as a teenager I couldn't figure out why my coach kept saying the pulls I was taking at the front of the group were too short - I counted 100 pedal revolutions like he said, but somehow was only at the front for roughly half the time as everyone else.

Yes, unless you are in the Southern Hemisphere. Down there, it’s one complete revolution of your left foot.

This made me laugh, seriously don't be afraid to ask a question. If your not asking your not learning!

In collage I asked a question that was a bit "simple" or so people thought. My professor then said," there is no such thing as a stupid question, just stupid people!"
He got a huge laugh at my expense. He then said, you should never be afraid to ask any question!

I just recently started paying attention to cadence because I was curious how efficient (or inefficient) my riding style is and how that translates to energy use over the course of a long ride. I'm not as bad as I thought, but I definitely have plenty of room for improvement.

On the surface the joke was on you, but in reality the joke was on all those that probably had the same question but were too stupid to know to ask.

You're never going to be right on the equator. You'd either be an inch or partially to the north or south of it. If you're crossing, just coast over before pedalling.

I would not sorry to much about cadence just ride, however most new cyclist shift to a harder gear and run a lower cadence. Try to shift to an easier gear and pedal a little faster and keep bumping it up over time.

For a new rider 70-80 cadence is plenty fast and a good start.
