Glad to see that Shimano with SIS has been remarked as better advanced technology compared to Campy Syncro Shift

I bought the Athena group after reading this at the time. It was a far from perfect product and probably inferior to shimano in most every aspect, but it got me through several years of racing.

The eight speed brifters were where Campy really upped its game.

I so agree, the 8 speeds on the Motta feel heads and shoulders better than any of the others from either brand on my other bikes. This was noticed from the very first ride.

I wonder what "numb" shifters feel like?

Well I am on the opposite side I tried back a fondriest many years ago with c record ergopower and found them less responsive and less precise than the dura ace st 7400.

I would pick Athena, but the Shimano had WAY better shifting. Campagnolo "kind of" caught up with Record 10spd, but right after that, Shimano jumped way a head again. Campagnolo hasn't caught back up since.
Downtube index, The Dura-ace 7700 era is still mind blowing. It's perfect.

By this time the Suntour patent was dead and buried.
Campagnolo took to long to give in.
