Weekend Cycling Reports - June 28/29
Last Weekend of June, and Happy Canada Day Weekend!! Tell us about your cycling (or hiking, swimming, soccer) this weekend ... especially if it is a long weekend for you.

Friday -- walking ... the longest walk I've done in a long time. A whole 3 km!! I'm building up again ... I hope!
Saturday -- walking ... here, there, and everywhere. We entertained the idea of taking the bicycles out, but it was a cool and rainy day today, and what with my ongoing cough, we opted to just walk.

This week I had my 49th birthday, and today I went on the maiden voyage of the S.S. Kestrel evoke SL!! We went 2.2 miles before the engine ran out of gas. Felt like this: Probably looked like this: Thankfully, no need for this: To be fair, there were some small hills involved, and I am at the very beginning of my journey to get back into shape. I have mapped out a route for when I make a stride or two in my fitness, and it'll be 3.7 miles. Then I will do that twice, and then three times. Then I am going to join in the LBS' beginner ride, which is typically 9-11 miles. After a few weeks of that, I will probably be received with open arms for the renewal of my 25+ year expired competition license.

Thank you! It is humbling to write that, because I used to ride 20-30 miles a day during the week and 50-60 miles on Saturdays in the mid-late 80s, when I was training and racing with my team, but at this point I am proud that I didn't get off and walk the bike at all, and by the end of July, I hope to be doing the three circuits of 3.7 miles each, if not more. I got a copy of the Time Crunched Cyclist, and am reading it now. So far it seems like a program I want to pursue, albeit at a lower performance level for the time being.

On Saturday I rode the Bacoon Ride here in central Iowa. 71 miles of bacon treats, and beer stops. About 3000 riders. It was a great way to train for RAGBRAI

My Sunday morning 52 mile route taking a break with the dead. This was one of the newer graves. Never see any other cyclists in these parts, ever. I would kill for a riding buddy.

Twenty fast miles through town, and a trip up Monte Sano. The ride back down is fun because you can hammer your highest gear without spinning out; then hang on through some s-curves and zoom past the Tollgate road intersection at 45mph. I do my Maxwell the Pig impersonation all the way down.
It is STEAMY here; temperature 90F (32C) and ~99% humidity.

Yesterday I did an organized ride with two friends, 122 miles & 7200 feet climbing. It was a personal best distance for me and I had a great time out there. We rode from Malibu up into the Santa Monica mountains, then inland for awhile and eventually back down to the Pacific Coast Highway to the finish. Passed the surfers at Zuma beach and all those beach BBQs at the end of the ride, it made us really hungry.
Today I rode 44 miles with a friend, just an easy ride around town.
This was my biggest numbers week cycling yet- 253 miles & 15,000 ft climbing. Now I am on a training break for a week, we'll be off on a sail trip next weekend. Looking forward to it.

47.5 miles yesterday, with a little over 3k feet. 29 medals on Strava, including 18 PRs (not all down to who I was drafting...)
Today a spin around the park with wifey on her road bike, me on the SS. All going great until the half link gave up spectacularly over the bridge, so need a new one of these; Amazon.com : KMC HL710 BMX Bicycle Chain (1-Speed, 1/2 x 1/8-Inch, 98L, Silver) : Bike Chains : Sports & Outdoors She got an unexpected workout having to tow me the (flat) half mile back on our street!

No riding, but I did have a birthday party to mark turning 60.
A friend from high school came that I had not seen for ~30 years. We did a 1500 mile bike tour together about 40 years ago.
Going to the mountains next weekend, but I may bring a bike and ride Tioga pass.

That was the one. A buddy of mine is competing at Lake Placid. I did the ride with him and a few of his friends. We got out early, so we got back before it got too hot. It was a good ride...pizza and beer at the finish were great!

Got back on the road bike this week after a couple of weeks on the mountain bike. Had planned a 40-ish(60k) mile out and back ride across the bay to Weedon Island preserve. Chatted up a guy I caught on the bridge and rode the rest of the way with him as he was heading there also. I was really running low on water on the way back and went by Performance bike to mooch some water from them. The store manager and a couple of others were heading out on part 2 of their Sunday group ride. I filled up my water bottle and tagged along, since it was in the general direction of my way home. Ended up with 49.5 miles/79.6K

Sunday ... more walking here, there, and everywhere.
This was one place we took a little stroll.
Monday ... some more walking. About 3 km again.

Another rough month for getting in the bike rides. I got a rare summer cold last weekend which kept me off the bike. I went out on a baking hot ride Tuesday night. Then two 40 mile rides Saturday and Sunday. Even though I started early in the morning I think it was already in the 80’s. By the time I finished it was about 90. The heat index is already pushing over 100. Dang it’s hot.

I am training to do the MS Coastal Challenge ride (Santa Monica to Santa Barbara).
On Saturday I rode 132 km, with a water and food stop at Neptune's Net (PCH, in Malibu).
On Sunday I did an 82 km recovery ride with a stop at my favorite donut shop.

I rode the Alta Alpina Double Century for the 3rd year in a row on Saturday. It's the Death Ride with 3 more climbs for 200 miles, 21,000' of climbing. This was my 19th double century and the hardest one yet. Lack of sleep, not quite in the fitness I wanted to be in and front derailleur issues had me wondering if I would DNF. There is nothing like struggling up a 13% grade at 4mph tacking the road in upper 90 degree heat. But I finished and got back to the start around 10pm.
