I ordered an Ultegra CS-R8000 cassette from JensonUSA. I received the cassette today and the outer package shows CS-R8000, however, the branding on the lockring shows CS-HG800. This is a 11/28t one. Is this correct? I thought the Ultegra one should have the Ultegra branding on it? Any ideas guys?

Thats probably the part number for the lockring? Most parts are going to be labeled with a part number. Not necessarily the groupset name.

Why are people so incapable of doing a little research. In this ase a quick look at the Shimano website (https://bike.shimano.com/en-EU/produ...-HG800-11.html) would answer the OPs question and stop others from unhelpful posts. Plus, are we really saying Jensen is in the business of mislabeling components.

Weird tat you would get HG800 lockring with 11-28. But the lockrings are interchangeable and your casette in almost certinly r8000. Install and ride.

That is the lock ring from an Ultegra 11-34T cassette. All of the Ultegra R8000 cassettes are labeled HG8000 except the 34T cassette is an HG800. The 11-34T HG800 also requires a 1.85mm spacer next to the hub. The others are direct fit with no spacer.

Have you checked to make sure it is actually an 11-28T? The number of teeth are stamped on each cog. Either Shimano goofed from the factory which would be unusual or it got swapped at Jenson or was a return.

Yes guys, I verified that it is indeed 11-28t. The image from competitive cyclist is what I expected. I did do research and saw that only 11-34t cassettes are labeled as HG800. See the pictures hosted below. The largest ring is 28t but the lockring is HG800. Let me know if other pictures are needed.

For whatever it's worth, I ordered a 11-32 Ultegra cassette from Competitive Cyclist just about a month ago and it came in as pictured above, the CS-R8000.

OP - I mean, it could be they packaged it wrong. I really doubt the lockring makes any difference, its simply a labelling thing so shop folks know which can be used on a 10spd freehub body. (vs 11spd freehub body)

Well, some of the more expensive cassettes use aluminum lock rings, while the cheaper cassettes use steel. You can look up the Shimano site to check which it is. T appears both of the models your mentioned after aluminum.

If you want to be sure you got a true R8000 and only the lock ring is incorrect, look at the spider arm. The difference between the R8000 and the HG800, (besides the tooth offering), is in the spider arm. On the R8000 it's a combination carbon/aluminum, whereas the HG800 is only aluminum. I also find it interesting that there's a 43 gram weight difference between the 11-32 R8000 and a 11-34 HG800. Seems like a lot for just two teeth on the big gear and some carbon versus aluminum in the spider.

JensonUSA did not package this item. They are a retailer/distributor. They have neither the time or the inclination to substitute certain parts of an item that they are selling which would involve opening the box and taking the time needed to remove and replace a lockring from one of hundreds of cassettes they are selling. A lockring is probably the most insignificant part of a cassette. As long as it is compatible with the smallest cog on the cassette, it will perform its function for the life of the cassette.
