Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I guess not every bike company wanted to squish their downtubes, so the clamp models were also available for those downmarket round tube fools

Ah, I see. I completely missed that aero craze and that kind of lever attachment. I just remember the standard, 9 and 3 o'clock, clamp-on shifters. I think I had them on every frame up until my first new one from Peter Mooney in 1983. I think the Coppi that preceded it had a little brazed-on stop to keep the clamp from slipping and taking off even more paint.

Makes for a super clean installation if cables are internally routed.

Weird 80's Dura-Ace content:

Shifter cable is replaced. Since they break so often, at least I have become fairly adept at replacing them. It's easy on the Habanero because external cables.

I checked and this cable was put in in March, so I did get approx 3500 miles from it. That's slightly better than usual but still ridiculous IMO. While the bike was up in the stand I checked chain wear (I put on new chain at the same time I re-did the cables) and the chain is worn ("stretched") 0.33% which is not worth switching yet, but getting close, I typically change the chain at somewhere between 0.5% and 0.75%. I know some advise wait until 1% but that seems too worn IMO.

That looks like a Le Tour Luxe. Neat bikes, and I've seen a few for sale locally but I've passed every time because of that shifter restriction.
I have an 84 Letour Luxe. And have a small collection of extra symmetric shifters, cause I like them so much. Some of them are clamp on. The other oddity with the Letour Luxe is the .08xx stem.

We escaped with little wind and an ungodly amount of rain. 10 inches and counting since Friday. And we're being told to expect rain through Friday morning. We currently live inside of a moat

I rode the Scapin like this for a bit.

This is where I wound up on the Scapin.

So far it doesn't seem as though I hurt myself by riding today. I hope to do a climbing ride this weekend but if the hip still hurts I'll skip it.

A friend of mine had a San Rensho Super Record Export Aero or some such with the aero shifters. Totally sweet bike.

Here is a link to one sold here on BF last year. https://www.bikeforums.net/21157478-post1.html

Yeah, geez! When I replaced the cables on the Battaglin after >5000 miles, there was no hint of fraying. Same with the Bianchi.

So it’s safe to say cables last about 3000 miles?
Thats something else I will have to replace soon. Can I use my Jag wire jacket and just replace the cable?

He has shifters that are particularly rough on cables - he's got the first generation that were routed under the bar tape and the design seemed to have some (literal) kinks.

If the issue is truly overcrowding, what can the city do about it?

Yes, but you do have to replace the housing every so often because it gradually loses its non-compressibility and shifting gets non-crisp. You can do your bar tape at the same time. I replace cables once a year-ish, or whenever they start to break, and housing about every other time.
