Gravel brifters and tires

Question 1: Has anyone ever used brifters with a gravel bike set up with cantilevers?

Question 2: Best cheapish 700C X 32 road/gravel tires?
---Options
Kenda Kwick Trax
Ritchey Speedmax
Vittoria Zaffiro
Michelin Protek
Schwalbe CX Comp
Schwalbe Land Cruiser
Continental Tour Ride
Bontrager CX3
Forte Gotham

(These will likely be 90% road/10% gravel - the MBK from the other thread).

My cx race bike has brifters and Paul cantilevers. Works great for me.

Lots of folks seem to like the Panaracer Gravel King.

Great BIKE! Obviously not in the market for Paul cantis...will more likely be a combo of Deore LX cantis with Ultegra brifters.

Gravel King is a bit on the pricier side for me at the moment.

What tires and size? They look like 32s or 35s?

Do you find anything odd about cable pull with the cant-brifter combo?

That GK is not file tread. But in between bar ends and disk brakes on CX bikes, all but one fast gravel racer (read CX) used brifters with cantis.
File tread is more like this

I had brake problems with my gravel build last year until I got good advice here and used inline brake adjusters. Makes all the difference. ( As well as dead straight wheels)

Tire size will depend on the frame. I've got a 47 front and a 38 rear. That's not bad for a '91 Specialized.

my vote for a good tire with file tread (and even some low profile side knobs) would be continental speed ride. i ran a set for a while. great compromise for the mix of terrain. little to no road noise and low rolling resistance. and, still very decent on gravel....depending on the gravel. and, and, they're not too pricey. $20 something range last i looked

brifters and canti's are great. i ran some ultegra 6500's with early 90's deore dx canti's and salmon pads. excellent set up

The vast majority of cyclocross bikes between the invention of brifters and the dominance of disc brakes used brifters with cantilevers.

(These will likely be 90% road/10% gravel - the MBK from the other thread).
Unless maybe if the "10% gravel" means "10% mud bog", I'd go with road tires. Especially if the gravel is going to primarily be actual rocky aggregate.

I use Shimano 105 10 speed brifters with cantilevers on my 83 Centurion Pro-tour. Either one of my 81 or 83 fits 38mm tires.

I ran 10 speed 105 brifters with cantis and they worked just fine. Have you looked at Panaracer Paselas? There are a few different flavors but all pet affordable. Wire bead is ~ $25. https://www.thebikesmiths.com/produc...BoCiMwQAvD_BwE

folding bead is obviously more expensive

Tires are 700x32 version of Kenda's police bike tire.
Most brifters should work fine with cantis, they have the same cable pull as caliper brakes.

Several bikes with Campy Ergos and Canti brakes - Avid Shorty 6, Shorty Ultimate, and cheaper Tektro ? Onyx on my tourer. All work fine. After my first cross bike build many years ago in which the only way to stop my bike was high speed dismounts, I learned to use inline adjusters like Jagwires.

As far as tires for road and gravel, I like Gravel Kings, Challenge Strada Bianca (vulcanized 160 tpi version) measures at 35 mm and Challenge Paris Roubaix (vulcanized) measures at 28-29. All of those can be found on sale pretty regularly in the $30 range.

Thanks for all of the comments! I feel better about the brifter/canti set-up. Someone had suggested Michelin Proteks as a really good hybrid option so I found a deep discounted pair in 700X32s, so I will try them. If they don't work, I can transfer them to my son's Trek Elance I built for him and start from scratch. I was toggling between the Pasela Pro-tites and the Michelins and couldn't pass up the price!

How do the inline adjusters help? I've never used...

STI shifting and canti brakes is the predominant setup used for cyclocross and gravel bikes for a couple decades.

Your tire options seems to vary in proce from $20-$45. Below are a couple of quality options at $25-35. Quality tires make a hire difference in ride feel.

Had I not just bought the Michelin Proteks yeaterday, I might have been tempted by the Vittorias...I've always had good experiences with them.

Interesting statements/questions/experience... as mentioned- the pull should be the same with brifters as with regular aero levers which should be the same pull as road calipers which are the same as cantis. BUT I had some sort of brake/lever/pull issue when I was running one of my bikes with Aero Gran Compe levers and old XT cantis. On paper it should have worked. My only experience with aero levers were the 6400-ish levers paired with some 6400-ish calipers and I was thrilled with the stopping power/advantage... they worked goodful. ly. The braking was great with the non-aero levers, so when I went to AGC levers I expected nothing less than what non-aero levers were doing- and I didn't get that. The levers were the only change.

Right now, I've got a set of TRP levers on a set of Suntour XC Pro cantis- and the braking is excellent. I assume the leverage/pull of the TRP levers is the same as ordinary road brifters.

So what would inline adjusters do? Is it sort of like an Avid rollamajig for brakes?
