If you saw my first wife you'd understand how I could have rationalized such a bad decision.

I just did this one, for a 650b Toei Randonneur:

1) It's exactly my size.
2) Last time I saw one of these was two years ago & it was going for three times as much.
3) Expensive as it is, I'm still getting it at a 75% discount (cost of commissioning the frame + the trip to Japan, renting a car, hiring an interpreter, and spending three days in Saitama while they measure me).
4) I won't (didn't) have to wait several years on their build cue.
5) It'll still be a once-in-a-lifetime project.

That said (and to recall Eric Cartman at Casa Bonita): it was TOTALLY worth it.

Few of my bikes at what you would call rational. The most irrational pickup was this Le Champion, badly painted, components abused, some broken, with original shop invoice. At least it was cheap. Would make a great stealth bike. Could be repainted a rebuilt into a very nice French-fast machine. Not sure I need to go there again though.

If you tell her I'm an ex-Marine, all that suspicion will come right back.

Ah, first wives. Find someone you hate and buy her a house.

And it would work. Closing the sale would be up to you.

Not necessarily. But remember, we are in a rationalization thread here. The things we rationalize don't have to be true; if they were true we wouldn't need to rationalize.

You know- I've actually pulled that one off, with a LeMond Tourmalet I found at a yard sale.
