Columbia Formula 10-speed
Hey guys, I'm looking for a commuter bike for daily use, about 20 miles a day. I'm 5'6 and I'm wondering if you guys think this Columbia is suitable and a good deal for the price

Columbia bikes, despite their heritage, have not been much more than entry level for a long, long time. That $140 is a lot of money that that bike is not worth. I think even for NYC.

So that Panasonic is a better deal in your opinion? I messaged the seller asking about the size, hoping that works out.
How about this Falcon Special. It's my size and looks like its in decent shape.
Falcon road bike- ready to ride- price negotiable!
I'm mainly looking for something cheap and light, if you have any specific bike brands or models I should be looking for

That Falcon is nice! Do you live in the city? Do you have a good place to keep a sweet bike? I'd hate to see that Falcon get beat up on the street.
I had a Falcon for a while. Nicely made bike.
Yeah, those Columbias are amazingly flimsy for something so heavy.

The Falcon is a bit better machine. It looks to be a model called Black Diamond, the manufacturer's base model. It has quite a good deal of rust that would need to be dealt with. The drive chain for example looks as though it maybe rusted solid. When one opens a machine which looks like this on the outside the inside is rarely pretty...
Unless you want a "project" I would keep looking.
Mods: this thread might be a better fit over on the C&V appraisals forum.

Oo, and it has those plastic deraillers. I don't have any real experience with them but I never liked the looks of them. I've heard lots of people knock them but not many folk these days have actually used them.

Simplex FD clamps tend to break over time, RD still going strong though on the 1975 Grand Prix

I'm 5'8" (with a 30" pants inseam- and I ride a 21" bike.
I saw a Specialized hybrid and a Trek 720 hybrid looking through the NYC bike classifieds with a $150 limit.
I took out the Panasonic link because there's plenty of bikes to choose from- But for $70- the Panasonic Sport 500- looks like a pretty good deal.

I do appreciate the merits of a "project" but that's not exactly what I'm looking for at the moment haha
Do any of these seem as promising?
Schwinn Le Tour / Excellent Condition
Road Bike good conditions!!!
Beautiful blue 1998 Trek 1000 - Used - Great bike
I understand that Aluminum and chromoly frames are lighter so that's what I'm looking towards

I live in Staten Island (technically part of the city ) but I go to school and work in Manhattan. I feel the summer is the perfect opportunity to become a daily bike commuter and I'm just looking for something light and cheap to get me over the Staten Island Hills. Both my job and school are in nice areas of Manhattan so I'm not really worried about the bike getting stolen.
