Misheard Lyrics
After years of hearing this song, I finally looked the lyrics for War's "Spill the Wine" and I knew the song was about some woman, but instead the correct chorus of "Spill the wine, take that pearl", I kept singing "Doooo I dig that girl, yes I dig that girl."
"Rocket Man" is another flub on my part, "....burning out a fuse up here alone," I would sing "burning out a fuse off every bone".
.....and the best one was Sugar Ray's "Every Morning" turning into "Captain Morgan".

Also reminds me of the early days of torrenting. "Smells like 'Team' Spirit." I also apparently correctly heard the lyrics in "Come as you are" by Nirvana as "I don't have a gun," but was convinced that it was "don't have a God"

my wife & I have an ongoing argument about the song "the female of the species is XXX than the male". I have to confess the lyrics are stated as 'deadly' (and apparently Rudyard Kipling wrote it first), but I insist that what they actually sing on the recording is 'deadlier'
[EDIT] I'm not alone; two comments from utub:
yakadee
I like this song but the grammar drives me up the wall. More deadlier? It's either deadlier or more deadly. He sings it correctly live.Graber Ma
3 years ago+yakadee I always heard it as "deadlier" too, but it makes me love it all the more. So grammatically perverse.
'grammatically perverse' is basically what I always thought, he was just being silly

I immediately knew "Spill the Wine" would be the topic starter when I saw this thread. I didn't realize what he was saying until about a year ago, my first time hearing it on a really nice stereo/vinyl.

In the Terry Jacks classic song "Seasons in the Sun", I actually thought I heard the lyric:
"But the stars we could reach, were just starfish on the beach".
How could I have heard such an idiotic line?
"But the stars we could reach, were just starfish on the beach".

All the way back to 1930
Jimmie Rodgers: "Standin' on the Corner" (aka "Blue Yodel Number Nine")
He says he doesn't have to "work", not worry. Not sure where his accent is from but he rolls the word: "work" almost until it sounds like: worry and I've even seen the incorrect word in lyrics. But the word that he and Louis Armstrong wrote the lyrics with is "work" and it's the only way it makes any sense.
Standing on the corner, I didn't mean no harm
When a police came and took me by the arm
It was down in Memphis, corner of Beale and Main
He said "big boy, you'll have to tell me your name"
I said "you'll find my name on the tail of my shirt
I'm a Tennessee hustler. I don't have to work"
