Phillips Road Bikes Late 1960s
Hi all,
I'm new to cycling and would like to buy the following bikes for my girlfriend and me to get us started:
Both are Phillips road bikes, made in 1968 or 1969. Made in Nottingham, England. The seller claims that they are both original with new tires, tubes, and pedals. Both bikes were barely used by the original owners.
I'm trying to attach pictures here, but it seems like I can't until I post 10 posts. If I can send pictures through private message, please let me know.
Seller was asking for $495 but got him to agree to $450. Is this a good deal?

This one sold on ebay for $399.00, not sure why, looks like a basic 3-speed

A pair of Philips 10 speeds from the 60s for $450? That's a bad deal and you can do better unless there is something truly exceptional about those bikes and I doubt that there are.

Where are you located? In most areas outside of large cities, we'd see these bikes sitting for a long while at $75 each. If in a city, you should see far better choices for $225 each. Perhaps if you adjust your profile or even just say where you live someone maybe able to post a link to a better choice.

I live in Houston but will be moving to Chicago soon.

I would pay $100.00 for the yellow men's bike and $50.00 for the green womans bike.
They both will need a complete tear-down, clean all of the old grease off, clean all of the rust and grime, re-assemble with new grease, cables, brake pads, rim tape, handle-bar tape, new tires and inner-tubes. You're looking at several weekends of work plus about $75 to $100 each for parts.

Key phrase is "agreed to price". If this is what you agreed to, then complete the transaction. For some reason you thought $450 was OK. The fact others may not agree doesn't matter.
IMHO, the best time to research value is before negotiating price. I have made "bad deals" in the past myself. I always just complete the deal and move on.
