He really made creepiness elegant. He was perfect for the voice of DEATH in the Discworld animations.

A man of many talents. During the LOTR filming, he explained to Peter Jackson what it sounded like for a man to die with his throat cut. Apparently his WWII experiences give him some knowledge of the subject.

The only Lord of the Rings actor to actually have met J.R Tolkien, and having experienced the horrors of war as a WWII vet, the horror films that he portrayed in, reportedly did not bother him at all.

I always wondered why Lee was so popular, I never saw him in anything where I thought he stood out very much. Then I discovered he was 6'5" tall. What a revelation that was, his great fame makes perfect sense now.

Christopher Lee's best gift was ironic gravity, which he brought to every role. It could be summarized in less than 10 seconds -- look for his guest appearance on Saturday Night Live in 1978 when he introduced musician Meat Loaf. (Unfortunately blocked by NBC in many areas, so you'll need a proxy to see it on YouTube, or try NBC's balky site, which can take 5 minutes to load a short video clip.)
While he may have believed he wanted to play Gandalf, he was better suited to Saruman. I can't imagine a better actor for that role.
It's unfortunate that Peter Jackson revised the LoTR story so heavily. I was looking forward to the original ending when Grima Wormtongue finally turns on his master and kills Saruman. Could have been great fun watching Christopher Lee and Brad Dourif chewing up all the scenery together.

I gotta think his height had something to do with his fame. Whenever I look up an actor or famous celebrity whose reason for fame and evidence of talent seems rather elusive, I look up the person's height, and it turns out they're nearly always at least 6'3" or taller. Some examples:
Chevy Chase (6'4")
Vince Vaughn (6'5")
Jesse Jackson (6'3")
David Hasselhoff (6'3")
Dr. Phil (6'3")
Sacha Baron Cohen (6'3")

Need I go on? When it comes to fame, height seems to help a lot of relatively-untalented people achieve it. Sure, there are a lot of tall people who deserve fame (e.g., John Cleese) but many, IMO, who do not.
