Customizing the Cassette Question

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Customizing the Cassette Question

I've got an Ultegra 6800 cassette with 11-32T because I live in the mountains. 11T isn't really necessary most of the time, and I miss having a 15T between the 14T and 16T on the 11-32T.

Is it directly compatible to exchange the 11T with a 12T with spacer, delete the 12T that's in there, and then add in a 15T?

And where do you recommend buying individual sprockets? Thanks.

How many cogs ?
Does SRAM make what you want ? Or different level of Shimano ?
Shimano needs more cassette options starting with 12. Campy has some starting with 13, which I just got... 13-26, instead of 12-25 to give me a tiny bit lower gear up my hills.

Rose bikes will sell you individual sprockets. Here is an Ultegra 6800 15 tooth.

https://www.rosebikes.com/article/sh...ket/aid:712522

Here is the 12 tooth first position:
https://www.rosebikes.com/article/sh...504/aid:712506

You need a first position 12 tooth as this has the serations that you need to bind with the lock ring. Your existing 12t probably doesn't have these.

Finally you need a 12t lockring (as I'm pretty sure the 11t one won't fit the 12t sprocket):
Token Alloy Lockring - Shimano 12t | Chain Reaction Cycles

The final question is do you need a new sprocket in the 13 tooth as well?

The 13t is available in second and third positions so I think you would need a second position one:
https://www.rosebikes.com/article/sh...512/aid:712514

The difference is the 2nd position has a metal extension to make the spacer while the 3rd position doesn't and would use a plastic spacer between the 13t and 14t.

Perhaps, to avoid damage to the plastic spacers you would need to ensure that you have the correct sprockets with the metal extensions for position 1 and 2.

To summarise it looks like you need the following:
15t sprocket
13t second position sprocket
12t first position sprocket
12t lockring

Another question about "custom" cassettes, since I've seen both answers from various sources.

I have an Ultegra equipped bike with an 11-28 cassette. Can I replace the 28 with a 32 and keep the same derailleur? Will I have to lengthen the chain?

You may have to lengthen the chain, you may need a longer cage derailleur, and it may not work with your frame at all. There are more than "both" answers because there are several factors involved.

Chain length depends on big chainring size, derailleur cage length, chainstay length, length of current chain, etc.

Derailleur cage depends on difference between big and small rings and cassette range and how much chain slack needs to be absorbed.

The derailleur hanger on your frame decides if any derailleur can work with a 32t cassette.

Or it may be cheaper to buy a 12-25 cassette and take what you want from it.

I did a similar swap using two Ultegra cassettes because I was riding a 12-25 and felt the need for a bit more help climbing so I purchased an 11-28. After a few rides I missed the 16T cog so I removed the 11T with lock ring, replaced it with the 12T and separate lock ring, and added my 16T from the 12-25. The gearing is more to my liking but it seems the shift ramps may be positioned differently on the newly added 16T cog because ever since the swap I get a somewhat delayed or noisy shift going up from 16 to 17. I've been riding it since November without any real problems but I hate the noise. As to the use of a 32T cassette with a short cage derailleur, it may or may not work? I was under the impression that 28 was no problem, 30 is pushing it and 32 was a no go.

What do you have up front? Do you have the option to reduce the size of the chainrings on the crank?

Loose cogs, without integrated spacers (1 and 2) or those on spiders are actually the same width as 10 speed. It's just the spacers that are different. A CS-5800 12-25 is pretty cheap though and will get you both your 15t and a proper 12t end cog.

The ramps for 1t jumps and 2t jumps are different, although usually a 1t shift still shifts pretty well even if not matched up perfectly. It would probably shift better using the 17t from the 12-25, which is different for those cassettes.

This is the easiest way to make this work. Take the lockring and the 12-15 from the 12-25 and the 16-32 from the 11-32. You'll have a 11-25 and a 12-32 left over. I just did exactly this for a week riding at high altitude in the mountains and it worked fantastically well for this flatlander. Your 12-32 will be 12-13-14-15-16-18-20-22-25-28-32. It's actually a much nicer set up than the original 11-32, in my opinion.
