I ran into a young Japanese guy who was on a long US tour a few years ago. I was riding my Miyata, and he commented on it. He pronounced it Mee-ya-TA, with the accent on the last syllable. I don't know if that's they way everyone in Japan would pronounce it. I still tend to pronounce it the same way, but with the accent on the second syllable.

as a japanese speaker: I was joking with the "its pronounced like it sounds" but that is pretty much the case for 99% of japanese words. its broken into 3 component sounds, but unlike english they are always (as with all always statements.. it comes with rare exceptions), pronounced the same way and with equal or very very slight variation in emphasis. so its : me-ya-ta. each one short, so saying its mee-yah-tah for example, gives the wrong impression even if it gets the vowel sounds correct as it suggests an elongation to create the sound. an english speaker needs to make the ee sound, but keep it half as long : just e.

to english speakers it can sound like the last syllable is emphasizesd even when it is not, as we ( I am native english) tend to de-emphasize and soften the end of words. the japanese do not and to our ears it stands out.

There's a small town, Buena Vista, that's just off I-81 in southern Virginia. Locals pronounce the first syllable identically to the first syllable of "beautiful", and Vista like "Fist a". The locals are beyond hope.

Also, not far from here is the town of Hebron, KY. Certainly the name was inspired by the place of the same spelling in Israel, but in these parts, pronounced He - bron, rather than Heb-ron. I've given up trying.

Any Monty Python fan could tell you that it is spelled: "Miyata", but it's pronounced: "Throat-Warbler-Mangrove".

Thanks for that. I think that describes what I heard from the Japanese cyclist that day--the last syllable wasn't strongly emphasized, but it did seem a bit emphasized to me.

OK.

Correct definition of Miyata:

Beaufort NC is "Bofert."
Beaufort SC is "Bewefert."

I knew a Marine named Beauford. It was "Boferd." Of course we called him Bo.

I also new a Marine, named, I kid you not, Bufort T. Justice. How could we not call him Bufort T. Justice?
As in "Buford T. Justice, get over here!"

Are we to page 2 yet?

Lets not forget the Kentucky pronunciation of Versailles. In France it is pronounced Vehr-sigh. In Kentucky, it is Ver-sails... Go figger...(intentionally misspelled.

And @RobbieTunes : Prolly? That is Probably...

When I was living in Seattle, a small town located just north of Des Moines, anyone who would mention it would pronounce it duh-MOYN.

This is a family forum so there's names I can't mention here....

I always heard it pronounced "MCAS Bo-Fert"... but occasionally as you mentioned "Bewefert."

The 5 Best Things to Do in Yemassee: https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attracti..._Carolina.html

We gave one of the guys in our squad the name Doofus. He was a big guy so he became "Big Doo".

Rocky Mount, NC has an altitude of 98' above sea level...

I used to speak some Japanese and I learned that Miyata should be pronounced Mee-Yah-TA but in fast spoken Japanese as in Tokyo it could be Mee-Yada.

The 1970's mini muscle car Datsun 240Z was called the Fair Lady Bluebird in Japan. Testosterone jolt eh?
