I was looking at various quick release parts, and apparently diameter doesn't seem to be important as it's almost never listed, only length is given. Are skewers a standard diameter or something?

The Trek I have on order list:
-front hub as 100x12mm thru axle
-rear hub as 142x12mm thru axle

I see Shimano Ultegra 6800 Front Quick Release and it says, "133mm Intended for 100mm spacing"
but the matching rear item says, "163mm Intended for 130mm spacing"

So apparently I can't use the matching rear quick release even though the overall length is greater than 142mm, or can I?

What got me started on this are bike trainers, where having a rear quick release makes it easier to use.

Why are you looking at skewers when you have through axles?

Ok, so maybe I'm using the wrong terminology as I haven't owned a bike in a few decades now.

From what I read looking at bike trainers, they use a 'skewer,' and that you need a quick release on the rear to pull out so you can insert their skewer.

Does it mean that I would need a bike trainer that takes only thru axles?

Fill me in. That's why I'm asking about these.

Through-axle designs use entirely different parts (frame dropouts and rear axles) and release procedure than older style quick-release axles. If you want to use a through-axle bike on a particular trainer, you will need to ask the manufacturer of the trainer if there is a through-axle adapter.

As mentioned what you have is a thru axle, not a quick release skewer.

I can confirm the Robert Axle Project axles do the job. My wife just bought a 2020 Liv Avail with Giant SR2 disc wheels and being new to bikes i'd never seen a thru axle before (my older bike has a quick release skewer and rim brakes). I spent hours looking for the specs for hers and took a gamble on a Robert Axle one. $100 (Australian) later, it arrived this morning and it fits perfectly. Wife's happy she can now ride on the trainer.

Keep in mind the type of axle will be different depending whether the trainer is wheel on (eg Kickr SNAP) or direct drive (eg Kickr CORE). For mine it was a wheel-on trainer. The nice thing is these axles are robust enough for outdoor use, so apart from the cosmetic difference there's no reason my wife can't take the bike off the trainer, head outside and go for a ride without swapping it back to the stock one.
