A Ross Mt St Helens is a very good bike, but also pretty heavy, in the old school MTB way. How's the chrome on it; looking pretty good?

The Ross Mt. St. Helens was an entry level ATB. It was introduced in late 1983 for the 1984 model year and was the second from the bottom model in a six model ATB line. For 1985 it was elevated to 4th position when the Mt. McKinley was dropped. The last year for the Mt. St. Helens was 1986, being replaced by the Bear Mountain for 1987. The MSRP varied from $250 - $265 US, depending on the exact year. All three years are readily distinguishable from one another. The 1984 version was equipped with side-pull brakes and a bullmoose handlebar with integral stem. The 1985 version retained the bullmoose handlebar but was upgraded to cantilever brakes. The 1986 version used cantilever brakes but the bulllmoose handlebar was dropped in favour of a separate handlebar and stem.

That's not a 1984-1986 model. Based on the straight fork and Rapidfire shift levers, it should be very early 1990s. Ross must have resurrected the model name.

I went back through my archives and discovered that the re-organized Ross company of 1990 (they went bankrupt in 1988 and didn't produce anything in 1989) did resurrect the Mt. St. Helens. It came with a rigid frameset for 1990-1992 before being upgraded with front suspension in 1993. It was Shimano 300LX equipped in 1990 & 1992, while the 1991 version was Sun Tour XCM. Consequently, this would appear to be a 1990 or 1992 model. The serial number may tell us the exact year.
