Wearing Bib Shorts with a Sunburn?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Wearing Bib Shorts with a Sunburn?

I normally don't burn. When I go out on a ride, I never wear sunscreen. My arms, legs, and face just tan. They don't burn. So I went swimming at a pool with my family yesterday. Of course, I carried the habit over and did not put on sunscreen. Well, I actually put it on everything I could reach, but I was very close to just skipping it and hopping in the pool without sunscreen. This means I didn't put it on my back. I didn't think twice and I hopped in the pool with my only my chest, arms, and legs protected against the sun.

Fast forward to this morning. I went on a ride and wore my bib shorts. I had to run errands, so I was also wearing a backpack. The combination between the backpack and bib shorts chafed my shoulders and back all to hell. Normally, it wouldn't be a problem; the skin on my back isn't very sensitive. So about 30sec into my ride, I realized that my back and shoulders were sunburnt. My shorts were chafing my shoulders all day.

So now I am sitting here, wondering what I should do for my ride tomorrow. I just put some aloe-vera gel on my back (with some help), which seems to soothe it a bit. But its sticky, so I definitely would not want to have it on my back during a sweaty ride. What should I use to prevent irritation on my back and shoulders tomorrow?

I do have a pair of regular (non-bib) shorts, but they are cheap Nashbar specials and they aren't very comfortable.

Wear the more comfortable bib-shorts, but tuck the shoulder straps in the waist band. Just wear them like shorts. I do that all the time with my bibs because I find the straps annoying.

Get a kiddie pool. Fill it with aloe vera, and just roll around in that sucker until you're all greasy and slimy. Repeat as necessary until there are too many dead flies in the pool.

Then, either tuck the bib straps into the waist or wear the shorts and deal with the discomfort (maybe make it a short day). And make sure your shirt has good sun protection.

HTFU. As a woman I wear a bra all day even with bad sunburn. If you can't wear bibs for an hour or two, which have much looser straps than a bra, then you sir are a wimp.

Ouch. I don't know which burn was worse, this one, or the one that caused the original post.

You got sunburned in Denver? *Floridian pauses for laughter break* Wow.

Seriously though...solarcaine spray. Do they still make that stuff? That's probably going to be your best bet. It isn't sticky like aloe.

you can get sunburned at high altitude a lot easier than sea level.

it's not the temperature, it's the sun's intensity.

If they had a "rep" feature here, I'd register a dozen other accounts just to give you rep under all of them.

@OP
I just apply fast absorbing/non greasy lotion.(fragrance free) I find Aveno Oatmeal lotion works nice for sunburns.
1st time I got sunburn was this year too!

I'm sure there's also a joke about an over-the-shoulder boulder holder that would fit this situation, too.

But seriously, Demaplast spray might provide some relief, too.

Are you looking to develop skin cancer later in life? Do yourself a favor and start using sunscreen when you ride. it's not just for protecting against burns.

It is very easy to get sunburned here as we are a mile above sea level. Hell I can be covered in sunscreen and riding home from the mountains while the sun sets and the back of my legs will burn.
How do you explain all the sun burned skiers in winter if it is a function of temperature?

I think this post deserves a:

Just do what homebrew01 suggested. In fact I've once or twice forgotten to put my bib straps over my shoulders and only noticed mid-ride. You won't even notice.

Hmm..Yeah, I'm a skiier and I know to always wear sunscreen when I ski, but I thought it was more a function of the sun reflecting off the snow than altitude. Apparently I missed something...

It is a combination of the two. I believe that was a bad example.
Our UV index tends to be quite high and I have seen burn times around 10 min. We also have a high skin cancer rate.

Hmm... Maybe I should rethink my habit of not putting on sunscreen. I often ride when the UV index is over 11 and don't burn. I guess my (very) white back is easier to burn than my dark arms, legs, and face.

Many of my friends with a pale complexion like mine end up having pieces of skin removed. I had one precancerous chunk taken out of my ear a few years ago and I use sunscreen religiously. I also burn from time to time no matter what precautions I take. My least favorite is on my thigh when my bib shorts have slightly different lengths.

I use liberal amounts of sunscreen and still have a bad biker's tan. I saw a photo of a person with really bad biker's tan a few months ago and lol'd, now I'm that person
