Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

It was one of the oddest but greatest pleasures I have had bicycling in a long time. It was the first time I had ridden my mountain bike since being put into hospital 14 months ago for 4-1/2 months. I built both bikes, mine around 10 years ago and it felt even better today than way back then. No tough stuff to climb or ride over today, neither really steep hills. They may come sometime in the future.

A solo ride where I picked up the pace a bit. On my new CAAD 12 with new Mavic Ksyrium Elite UST tubeless wheels/tires. So much fun.

Group ride today was harder than usual. I held 189bpm (my max ever is 191) for about a minute. The crazy thing is that it didn’t seem to hurt all that bad. Guess I’m getting used to thrashing myself.

25-miler this morning on the DeRosa. Put a smile on my face, but I’m beat. I knew I was out of shape, just not how badly!

In the middle of a non-stop rain period that's supposed to go through a week from now. Snuck out this morning in between the storms for a 27 mile ride. I've been wanting to take out the Ribble bike to try the tubulars on it but not with wet roads. So I headed out on the "bad weather" Jake the Snake. Nice little cruise around the valley just enjoying being out. This is the only bike I've got with Gatorskin tires on it so I can take it on the dirt roads too. That is a plus.

28 miles on a solo workout route Friday evening.
46 miles on a casual group ride Sunday. The most nerve-wracking bit was the 8 mile trip along the MUP to the meetup spot. The warm spring weather has brought out the casuals, families and dogs. Riding the MUP on a Sunday in this weather is like threading a needle between jugglers ... juggling knives. Actually felt better to get back in traffic for most of the ride. And great to see some cycling friends I hadn't seen much the past year since my injury.

Pretty good weekend, still trying to sort out my thyroid balance. Still feeling exhausted on rest days between rides. But PT for the shoulder and neck injuries is making progress -- getting better upper body muscle tone and less chronic pain in the back, neck an shoulder.

I rode my second Storming of Thunder Ridge, in southern Virginia. 46 miles and 3k and change climbing. I did it on a 40/30 granny, which makes me happy.

Tuesday and Thursday did my 26 mile Davis Is. evening ride. It was pretty warm but not horrible yet. The wind refuses to change direction so I did the S. Tampa Picnic to Davis Is. ride on Saturday and Sunday. The mornings were relatively cool, but it got warm quickly. Both rides were around 41 miles. I'm feeling so much better than last month. I can catch up to faster riders now and my legs don't feel beat when I get home.

94 mile overnight tour to a state park. 2,700' of climbing on the way out. Fewer on the return.

Geese and goslings in a row.

118 miles and 9856 feet of climbing on Sunday. Most of it was part of a local sportive, the Black Rat, but I cycled to the start. It started near Bristol, in England and cycled over the bridge into Wales where we were met with quite a few hills. It's always fun to say you cycled to another country for the day. The route took us over the Gospel Pass, which is the highest road in Wales. It was a really lovely day out on the bike, and a very challenging ride, but worth it. It was my final big ride before Chase the Sun in June, which is 205 miles across England. But with less climbing over the total distance. It was a really lovely route, and support throughout was absolutely fantastic. Feed stations well stocked, mobile mechanics on route, as well as several cars doing sweeps along the route throughout the day. Great atmosphere as well at the end with a cider and pasty/sausage roll waiting for you at the end.
