I have two fixed gears and am by no means rich. Though maybe it is the brakes that is causing me to not have wealth? Certainly the eeBrakes on the Langster are, they are the best rim brakes out there bar-none but they are not cheap. The "article" if you could call it that was pretty terrible but fixed gear bikes are pretty awesome and do not have to be in the realm of hipsters and rich people but a bike for all and for the longest time the only kind of bike till they invented those derailleurs.
I love my geared bikes a ton and have a bunch of them but there is something magical about riding fixed. For those who haven't done it I recommend getting one and trying it out. Especially one with a decent drivetrain that is quiet and smooth. They are fun and simple and easy to deal with and are a nice thing to have around. Even a single speed is a ton of fun.

If you want to realize the "American Dream" it's a lot easier to do it in Canada or Norway.

I know plenty of rich people, typically successful business owners and early stage investors in the tech sector. In my observation, the primary ingredients of success are: Wealth, education, and work, in that order. Education fits in the middle because it's a form of wealth. I'm not talking about the "super rich" who can live comfortably on the capital gains from an inheritance, but a slightly lower stratum where wealth, education, and work, all support one another. I'm rich, and the wealth of my family is a combination of inheritance and "work" whose value (in dollars of course) is strongly tied to education.

And, the Brookings Institution is neither Microsoft Network (msn?) nor is it a media outlet (msm?).

I'm not advocating Socialism or even Marxism....just that if you find yourself 'rich', how about you put back? How much can you take with you when you die? Do you like the idea of your heirs fighting over your fortune and ruining lives? How much is too much, Jeff Bezos et al? Honestly, our democracy has to cave at some point if the one-percnters have the lion's share.

I have heard this as well, the less there is at stake, the more vigorously people fight over it. But if everyone knows they're getting millions no matter what, the details are not quibbled over as much.

The super rich crazies buy things like a Mediterranean villa for their Shih Tzu or a helicopter to transport alpacas to their private zoo. Ride bicycles? Nah...they don't.
Didn't P Diddy buy his son a one third of a $Million M-B Maybach for graduating from high school?

I lived through this and the larger the family, the more the 'certainties' can be undone. For example....if you're an heir and your patriarch had financial holdings all over the country, you will have to hire an attorney in each venue to challenge a will. Lawyers only consider contingency fees if they think they can win. Things can get more complicated, expensive and overwhelming that most can imagine. It's not at all like it is on TV/Movies. You'd be surprised what your 'rights' as an heir really are.

As a lawyer and someone who has probated an estate, not really. Just saying that if there is an extremely large pie, there is less of a chance people will fight over the size of the slices. But since I have no kids nor anyone I think deserves whatever I may have left after I am gone, it's all going to not-for-profits. The major named beneficiary is a cycling-related one.

I saw Ben Simmons and Kendal Jenner in my Local Whole Foods over the winter. I thought I heard Simmons ask a worker what aisle the jump shots were in.

Rich people are now into model trains.
Warren Buffet, Michael Jordan, Elton John...
$6000 stainless steel locomotives, custom designed electronics, changing scale model foliage in fall and snow in winter...
Apparently all the fashionable households have large train layouts.
