Foldable tandem (20" wheels)
Hi!! Where can I get cranks which allow the stoker to pedal when she wishes? Thanks.

Search “IPS Crankarm Set” on eBay and you’ll get some returns for the Lasco Independent Pedaling System tandem cranksets with a freewheel in each set. You can use just one set, but if you use two, both riders can coast independently. Right side timing chain is required whether you use one or two cranksets. We ride a da Vinci tandem, but used this setup to convert a Santana Sovereign to independent pedaling/coasting and it worked well once we sorted out the proper bottom bracket axle lengths. They use square taper BB’s. Similar, if not the same, cranksets were used on ATP Vision and Sun recumbent tandems.

The da Vinci independent coasting is not something that’s built into the cranksets. It requires a tandem frame built around the system with an intermediate jackshaft (think “bottom bracket”) with a double freewheel block on the left side that joins the cranksets via front and rear timing chains. Also, required is a front derailleur mounting stub on the frame to shift the small chainrings attached to the other end of the jackshaft.
Here is a photo of our 2001 Santana Sovereign with the Lasco IPS cranksets fitted. We sold this bike last fall and now our da Vinci Joint Venture is our only tandem.
