Help me learn about my Batavus & Gazelle (2008)

hi all. so about ten years ago, like immediately before having kids, my husband and i bought a Batavus Fryslan (for him) and a Gazelle Basic (for me). they went into storage and other than a handful of rides, these bikes have been criminally neglected. i'm getting to feeling someone else might enjoy them more than we do. but don't know anything about value other than what we spent on them in 2008 (over $1K each at Rolling Orange in Cobble Hill, Bk, NY) if we were to offload these bikes, how might we do that? and what kind of return might we be able to expect? we're still in brooklyn, btw. thanks so much in advance. jaime (ps more pics available)

what;s in a name?

Ones an Opa , the Gazelle is an Oma.. Grandpa & Grandma bikes ..

2 different Dutch company Brands ..

Fryslan maybe refers to Frisian part of the northern chain of Wadden islands
Friesland is the northern mainland those islands are north of ... just my guess..

Batavia was the name of their Colonial territories now known as the Islands of Indonesia..

Common as Dirt there ..

Brooklyn has money. at least housing is expensive

(IDK what you'd get auctioning them off, actions set what it's worth for those who bid)

I was only there in 69 , due to the Navy sending me there..

....

Sadly, very limited value there. You will really need to find the right buyer that can appreciate it. Market for bikes like this really varies. Best if you are in a major metro area with a strong bicycle culture. I see you are in Brooklyn, that helps a lot.

On new bikes, they depreciate every year, just like cars and other items. At the 11 year old point, they have depreciated a lot. Realize at the end of a model year, many bike shops discount their inventory by 25% or more. Just use whatever method is convenient in your area: Facebook Marketplace or C/L most likely, or both.

Dirty + flat tires = HUGE discount.

Here in the middle of the Great Corn Desert, I'd have a hard time selling them at our local coop for more than $150 each. NYC has far more diversity and I think there would be more demand from people coming from Northern Europe who are used to that kind of bike.
They do appear to be in pretty good condition. Air up the tires, wipe off the dust, take good photos for craigslist. I'd start at $400. You can always accept less after a couple weeks. PS. advertise them as Tariff exempt..

If any one offers to pay via anything other than cash, and arrange for delivery, it's probably a scam.

I would think the OP could get $300 or each there market cleaned up and ready to ride. Also get them outside and take some good photos typically storage locker = %50 discount and about half the potential buyers will just pass if they see a storage locker photo.

Fryslan is the name for Friesland (one of the provinces of the Netherlands) in the Frisian language. Yes, there is such a thing as a Frisian language, it's not just a dialect of Dutch.

I'd think $1k would have bought both in 2008. Gazelle's RRP for the Gazelle Basic 3sp was €499 at the time, and I suspect the Batavus was about the same.

And like @wrk101 says, they are currently just old secondhand bikes, so you'll either have to take a loss or keep them for another twenty years to make them 'vintage' and sell them at a premium to some Generation Beta hipster.

But the Euro hovered right around $1,50 at that time iirc so that makes them $750 bikes and TS bought them in NY, not the Netherlands.

I don't know what Gazelle's US strategy was at the time, but here in Holland I think the actual sales price would have been closer to €399. My wife bought a 3-speed Batavus omafiets in early 2009, and I'm sure the price started with a 3.

Anyway, it's all moot now. Best would be to put some air in the tires, polish them up and sell to a well endowed hipster couple.
