I'd throw my vote to the Trek 1000 since seller lists new cassette, chain and bottom bracket. Plus it has a threadless headset so a little more modern then the 400 Elance. The Cannondale has a threadless headset adapter so either one should be easy to swap handle bars to your liking.

My info was wrong - the Cannondale is firm on price at $250
the Trek Elance will come down to $200
my parents neighbor owns a bike shop so I gave him a ring for another opinion
he said if it were his call he’d go for the Cannondale
its harder for for me to find info on the Cannondale Saeco CAD3 bike than the Trek for some reason - $250 seems fair though for the couple I found from around that year

Hey guys - Found out that the Cannondale is a Saeco 3.
I got the Trek Elance owner to come down to $200
Cannondale owner will also come down to $200
If nobody thinks the Cannondale is better for some reason I’m going to go look at the Trek this week and get it if there’s no issues with it

(But if anything seems off, it’s good news that the Trek has supposedly been owned by a mechanic.)

Well my price point just changed. Now budget is up to $500
I'd rather still get best bang for the buck
The reason for the budget change is that my brother who has done a fair amount of biking and triathlons convinced me that I should pony up and get something a little nicer
So far I found this one - I'll keep looking in case something better pops up. He offered it for $350 and might get him to go $325 if I really want it. It has Tiagra components and it's a 2010 model

Assuming the C'dale is 8 speed, I'd probably just save my money and go with it. If you actually get into the sport, you're probably going to want to change anything you buy out after a few events when you know better what'll suit you anyhow.

Personally I'd go with the Cannondale. If you ever need a better bike in the near future just upgrade the wheelset.
