Can I mount a 20x2" tyre on a rim that currently seats a 20x1.75" tyre or is it too big?

My wife has a Schwinn Loop that she wants the tyres upgraded on. They seem to mount 20x1.75" Kenda generics at the moment, so I've looked around for some quality replacements. I've already ordered some Marathon Plus for my own 20x1.75" wheels (literally delivered last night) and thought to do the same for her but I've wondered about the "Big Apples" instead. These are evidently a more comfortable ride (though lower in puncture protection), and some people seem to prefer them over the Marathon Plus. These only seem to come in 20x2" at the smallest, however.

I've never tried to miss-match sizes like that so my instincts say no, but I am often wrong about things.

It looks like that bike has fenders. The tires will fit the rim, the question is whether you have space under the fenders, if you have them.

That's a good point - I hadn't thought about the narrower rim making them stand out further and touching the fenders (which are there).

The rim shouldn't be a problem, but the frame might be. How much clearance do the current tires have?

I'd have to check, though she did decide a little bit ago to go with the Marathon Plus over the Big Apples, so it's academic at this point now. Unless the Marathon Plus could also be having a clearance issue?

I put 2.5in tyres on an 80s shopper, they just cleared the mudguards but I had to fettle the chainstay tubes of the frame and dimple the inners of the fork a touch with an automotive spring compressor/expander...
