I don't really have a local shop. I do 99% of my own work, and the local 'performance bike' shop is oob. There are two other places with 20min, one of which has deep roots, and I purchased my sons bmx there. I am disinterested in 'modern' bikes in general, so most shops do not do much for me. I see more eye candy on line. There is a boutique high end place about 30 min away, but the finances are out if my league.

There is a 531 dawes with weinnman center pulls that is abandoned in an all aroud rei type store with a bike dept. It has a repair ticket and old rear der taped to it in a ziplock. I want to make them an offer, or at least express interest.

they work on every thing, build frames, do mods, do custom unicycles..... Stock Jones, Rivendell
I don't have a great pic but one this gives and idea

shows a bike build they did, you can seen a couple of Jones in the background and a old cruiser hanging

Went by my LBS recently, there was a Crescent on the rack. Boy, it was nice; steel, lugs, Campy Super Record. I had never heard of Crescent before; they are Swedish, I believe.

My LBS here in Kingston is Frontenac Cycle. I usually step in for bearings, tools, tubes, and other consumables. Great bunch of folks that go out of their way. They sell Norco, Surly, Brodie, etc. My 1950 Raleigh with the Sturmey AG three speed / dyno combo hub was a fascinating piece of history for the staff. They want me to bring it in when I'm finished the preservation / reactivation. They wanted to know where all the bearings were going, and once I brought in the rear wheel to have the spokes adjusted and the wheel taken care of they were very interested in what it would be attached to. Genuine bike people without the pretense I sometimes run into at the boutique shops.

Most of those I see are low-end piles. Maybe one in ten will be mid-level or better. Seems like the paint is always orange, though, so that's a plus...
