Definitely cheating, although a couple of guys were on them in '16 who had their MTBs 'grandfathered' in from previous rides when the rules weren't so exclusive. I remembered one guy who just blew past me on one washboardy downhill section. I was being a little cautious (not something I'm known for, when gravity is to my advantage) on my 32mm tires; I was getting bounced around a bit. He was riding cushy on huge tires and a suspension fork.
Overall, I think 35mm tries would be the sweet spot for me, at a little over 200lbs these days, but I might ride my '72 Nishiki Semi-Pro, which is already comfortably shod with 38's.
For 95% of this ride, fat knobby tires is just way overkill, IMO.

But don't let that video fool you. Sure, I get a little teary every time I watch it, and some of it was just like that. But this ride is HARD. You need BIG TIRES (or a big fluffy butt).
There are HILLS, especially on the way back (yeah, Nine Mile Hill is actually more than nine miles). And then there's the hail. Yes, hail. The wet kind.
Despite all that, I'd do this ride again in a heartbeat if Mrs. Doc hadn't threatened me with A Fate Worse Than Death if I did this AND Coppi this year, cuz two weekends in a row..
So, 2020. I'll be back.

Dave, the more I look at those Breton style jerseys..the more it grows on me. Especially the LS one. I didn't order one when I registered but how am having second thoughts. I assume the are wool. Are they? Who makes them? It would be pretty cool to have a long sleeved one.

But I digress. Message me and we can get a jersey worked out, I’ve already done it for one registrant.
Now if money were no object, I’d get the Saint James Matelot fisherman’s sweater. But at $225+... They made a groovy sweater for Velo Motors a while back, and were part of the inspiration for this version.

Yeah I can't do both this year because of work but I want to do this ride. Which size tires would you use? Gearing?
Maybe it's time to do a 650b conversion . . .

Go as low as you can for gearing. I’ve done 42x26 before, but the hills were a killer. My wife gets by fine on 30x28 using a triplizer from Red Clover for her Stronglight 93 crank. Check her ‘73 Gitane in my sig.

2019 Cino is definitely not in the cards for me. On the other hand, 2020 is a very real possibility. And since there is a bit more flexibility in the Cino bike rules as compared to the Eroica bike rules, I have more options in what bike to bring. Decisions, decisions . . . . .

By coincidence, or fate, the same day I first read this post a really sweet Rando bike showed up for sale. It needs some work but right now has 700 x 32 on it and looks to have room to spare. Hmmm....

Hitting up Glacier is a great add-on to the ride, it is bucket list worthy for anyone interested.

This year's Cino is going to be a bit a bereavement tour for me, as well. My favorite drunk uncle passed in April, my favorite gay drunk uncle passed two weeks ago and then my mother just last Thursday. Yes, they were all over 80 years old and in failing health for quite some time, so, not a great shock, but Jeez Louise! An entire generation gone in a couple months. Also, I'm officially out of a job after Labor Day. The business I've been running for the last 15 years is closing down, building to be demolished starting after Sep 15. An eventful summer, to say the least.
I'd better get my ass over to Montana this September, just for a breather.
