Bontrager Helmet Safety Performance Falls Far Below Mfr. Claims

In a statement released on Thursday, the competitor said: “MIPS subjected the new WaveCel helmet technology to their battery of tests, with results far below WaveCel’s substantial claims of injury prevention. WaveCel has made sizeable claims about the efficacy of its technology… Preliminary test results of WaveCel helmets by MIPS cannot substantiate these claims. While further testing is warranted, MIPS cannot see that the helmets perform in a way that the claims Bontrager/WaveCel makes in the comparison between WaveCel and other helmets/technologies. Once additional testing is completed, MIPS intends to share that data with the public.”

There are a substantial number of cyclists who would never purchase a Bontrager product even if it defied gravity.

In all seriousness, it is great that companies are advancing the science of safety. Motorists railed against airbags, anti-lock brakes and mandatory seat belt laws but now we hardly think about these things. There might come a day when Koroyd, WaveCell and other yet to be invented products are the norm. I welcome it.

Bontrager isn't the player however and companies like Giro are not going to sit back and let Bontrager take market share. My guess is that others will come out with similar products soon enough and that might be the best thing to come out of Bontrager's melodrama. Competition is good and my head is as safe today as it was before March 19th.

One thing, I have to wonder about their statistics.

48 times more effective than what? "Regular Helmet"?
Prevents 99 out of 100 concussions? Based on Test dummy data, not sending fixie riders off into traffic to bash into cars.

Anyway, we can probably assume that the new 2019 Trek helmet is 48x better than one of these.



However, their own testing seemed to indicate that the new WaveCel helmets were almost identical in some cases to the MIPS helmets.

Did they display ALL the MIPS helmets, or pick and choose which ones to display next to their own helmet line?

And, that 99 out of 100 concussions????

So, that is assuming theoretical impacts that would likely give riders without helmets 100 concussions?

In the rear world, (with or without helmets), impacts vary from no injury at all to a bit of road rash to concussions to severe head trauma to death.

And, a helmet rating should take into account different potential crashes.

Over the last couple of years, there were times when I intentionally removed and carried my helmet in times when I felt the risk of heat injuries outweighed the risk of impact injuries.
