SRAM v Shimano cassette size problem
I am trying to change my Shimano 105 based 11-32t to a SRAM 11-36t for hill climbing. There are many threads all over the net about doing this. However I have found a bit of an issue with the thickness of the cassette, which no one seems to have mentioned any where (which makes me think I am doing something wrong). The SRAM 11sp is slightly wider than the Shimano, and this means I can not get the locking nut on the spindle.
I can only imagine that either 1)I need to buy a wider hub and re-spoke the wheel, 2) find slightly narrower sprocket spacers, or sand down a fraction of mm off the included spacers.
Any suggestions gratefully received!

Is the Shimano cassette an 11-speed 105? If so the SRAM should fit the same hub. If the Shimano is a 10-speed, the 11-speed SRAM requires a wider freehub body. If the Shimano is not really a 105 but an 11-speed MTB cassette, it will fit on a 10-speed freehub body but the SRAM won't.

Check to see if there is a spacer installed (it looks like a flat ring) on the free hub (where the cassette mounts). If installing an 11 speed SRAM or Shimano cassette on an 11-speed freehub, a spacer is not needed. Someone might have installed one of one is there.

Yes, check the "speeds". 10 vs 11. That will likely make a difference with accurate shifting too.
For Shimano, 34T and larger 11-speed cassettes will typically work on the older 10-speed freehubs.
Also, if your new cassette came with a spacer, you probably don't need to use it.
Does your derailleur reach the 11/36T cassette, and wrap enough chain?
