She is my hero!
" Thank you dad!" - She said. Funny thing is she almost never calls me dad. She calls me Pops because she says I'm too old."
"What for?" I asked.
"For making me try again!"
"You're welcome honey but I didn't make you. It was your idea, remember?"
"Several minutes later she said: "Dad, I'm really proud of myself. I'm happy I tried." A bit more time passed she asked If I would be mad or if I she called the ride short after lunch. We had set for a 30 miler with a lunch at mile 18. Big brother was gonna meet us with his car after his soccer practice. She asked if she could ride home with him. "I'm really tired!" The climb wasn't what made her tired. She was pushing the pace really hard in an attempt to break her mileage record. At lunch she said: "I should've paced myself. I went really hard at the beginning. Can we try again next weekend?"
Sure honey and no, I'm not mad at you. I love you and you make me proud!

great! 
but I don't like this hill for practice, for a new(er) rider. this day seems quiet but with traffic coming in both directions & there being a blind aspect to it, it has some bad potential. (coming from an overly protective parent) meaning the hill obscures drivers' (from both directions) views of oncoming traffic

Thank you for the concern but I'll never put my kid in a situation it would be unsafe for her.

The video and pics don't make the hill justice. It starts easy but it kicks to a nasty 8%. She got caught by surprise the first time around and ran out of momentum on too heavy of a gear. After she found out she had a granny gear she managed OK. The second attempt she went to the granny too soon and started spinning too much. She recovered well and made it through.

Great post.
When my daughter (probably about 8, at the time) and I rode together, as we got near home she would always yell "Tour de France time" and pedal her legs off to beat me to our street. I always let her win.
She's 27 now, a mother and a NICU nurse - she's still one of my heroes.

3 years later - "Come On Dad, lets go do some hill repeats"
No kids myself but I've a 30 year old nephew I'm close to whom I got into mountain and road cycling at age 17. Gave him a Heron road bike that he used for 7 years to commute on when he lived in Melbourne AU. LOVES cycling !.

Here is our new adventure if anybody is interested. She did 21 miles after a soccer game she wanted to go for a ride. Only condition we had to stop for a blue slushee which I obliged.
The video is at the very end as we were arriving to the car parked on the other side of this bridge.
Love every minute with here.

Oh man, you’ll pick up a fight with her. The blue slushee is her favorite and don’t even try to convince her otherwise.
