Campy Ultra Torque on a vintage Colnago
Hello all,
I am planning to install a Campy Record ultra torque on my Colnago Master Piu. I went to most of the discussions about loctite or not loctite, bb facing or not, etc. However, there is one concern I have for which I could not find an answer. There is a cut out under the Master Piu's BB shell and the crank axle will be exposed to road dirt and possibly water. I am concerned about this, but should I? What should I do about it?
Thanks for your comments!

You should follow the Park Tool recommendations for Ultra Torque installation and service.
https://www.parktool.com/blog/repair...o-ultra-torque
The bearing cup threads should have factory-applied thread locker on them already. The crank bolt should be greased.
Bottom bracket facing is always a good idea, but unless the paint is very thick or the shell's steel deformed, it shouldn't affect the installation. I would say do it if you can, but don't worry about it if you can't.
Regarding the shell cut out, a plastic BB sleeve might work with the Ultra Torque cups/spindle. The bearings are inside the cups so they might not get exposed to crud from the cut out. Hard to tell.

Thanks TenGrainBread. A BB plastic sleeve would be good. Maybe someone can confirm which sleeve would work and where I could buy one at a decent price or want to share any other personal hack.

There's no need for a sleeve. The bearings sit outboard of the BB so a sleeve won't do anything to protect them. Just make sure you use lots of grease on everything and you'll be fine.

I run Ultra Torque cranks on an older Merckx that has BB cut outs. I don't have any kind of sleeve over the spindle like I do on my other Colnago with old Super Record.

UltraTorque does involve a mechanism of fine interlocking teeth on the axle and a bolt to secure it. I don’t recall what the axle is made of, I assume steel, and I think the bolt is titanium. On my bike I’d want to keep that from getting gunked up as much as possible. The plastic bottom bracket sleeves from the older bottom brackets tend to be overpriced when sold alone. I would probably fashion something out of flexible plastic or aluminum can to act as a sleeve. Another option is thick coat of grease on the axle, but that might be a challenge to pull off without getting grease on the face of the teeth.
All that being said, if the bike is all pavement, sunny day rider, I wouldn’t worry too much.
