The stock Schwinn Terra tires have been replaced with period correct Tioga tires from the late '80's. The Nitto stem and bar were swapped with a chrome Tioga quill stem and a flat MTN bar.

This Cimarron is not my size and I don't need another in my stable because nothing can take the place of my custom '88 LE resto-mod but for the sake of preserving an almost original bike I had to make the trade. Who knows what will happen down the line... maybe a bike for my daughter when she gets a little taller, but it's safe for now.

Here are a few photos...

I'm glad you grabbed this one-

Now I think- WHAT THE **** WAS I THINKING!!!!

Beautiful bike and great repurposing it @4funbikes!

Well, I just found #3 , a 1987 model. Kept my streak alive, when I find one, I buy it.

The bike is pretty much full Deore XT, love the bronze Nitto stem and bronze chain rings. Looks very original to me, although I was surprised it did not have bronze rims.

I now have a 1987, the 1988 LE, and a 1989. This one is definitely too small for me, and too large for my wife.

As found condition, dirty, but pretty decent. The last pic is the headbadge on my LE: 3287 = November 24th, 1987 = 1988 model.

The stem and chainrings started out as black (apparently they sun-fade to bronze?), however the original Araya "Hard Anodized" RM-20 or RM-25 rims were originally bronze. What rims are on there now?

Interesting, they don't look faded, perhaps they ran out of the hard anodized versions? BTW, what is the date on the frame? I have one built just over a month earlier (dated 0297 with a frame dated I6xxxxx = Sept. '86) and it came with bronze hard anodized RM-25s. It is a 22" frame, I think they were using the wider RM-25 on larger frames and the RM-20 on smaller frames.

^ Great to see these things surfacing. I'm always on the prowl for another.

Thanks The Golden Boy. The bike is all business. It's my go to for most situations.
The High Sierra is a great bike. I upgraded from one. Though next time you see a Cimarrron; Jump on it!

Notice Neopop's 1987 above also has silver rims. Schwinn was struggling back then, they may have just been using up stock.

Holy crap. I'm pretty sure I've never seen this before. Sequential serial numbers. Mind you their not built right after each other but a single day apart. Better be my lucky day because I even bought two lottery tickets this evening. Luck better be on my side. Lol. This is pretty darn rare though given their both LE's and on completely opposite sides of the US.
And the rarity of them in general.

I actually have seen that before on other unique unannounced Schwinn models like the Sport Limited, which appear to all have been built during about 2 weeks in late '77. In a similar fashion I would believe that Schwinn built all of the Cimarron LE models at the same time since it was also an unannounced model. If we could collect the frame and badge numbers of these it would help to confirm or deny.

Interesting, were they RM-20 or RM-25, and what was the frame size? Also what were the badge and frame dates?

Welcome okmain! Thanks for that cool piece of history... another feather in Schwinn's cap, proof they were still building quality! I ride my 1989 Schwinn 974 Aluminum Series road bike everywhere, I bought it new as a high school graduation present to myself since I would be racing my freshman year on my college cycling team. The Aluminum Series bikes were licensed from Gary Klein, he is reported to have taught the best welders working for Schwinn how to work and weld the oversized aluminum in 1987/88 in Schwinn's brand new production facility. Schwinn may have been having troubles but they were definitely looking ahead to the future. I also bought a Schwinn Circuit when I bought my 974, the Circuit was Schwinn's top-of-the-line (as was the 974 in aluminum) lugged Columbus SL steel road bike, I sold it to a friend last year and he proudly rides it every weekend as the only steel bike in his cycling crew. The Chinese made WallyWorld crap with the "Schwinn" name can't cast a shadow on my love for these Schwinn bikes!!!

Check it out, the 974 even had the "Klein weld" treatment at the bottom bracket shell and the yoked seat stay just like Gary's bikes.

I'm glad I snagged it too but I needed another bike at the house like I needed another trip to the bicycle doghouse courtesy of the misses... stink eye included at no extra charge. Now that it's safe and sound, it needs to go away! You're the Cimarron King, thumb through your Rolodex and find someone in your Cimarron Kingdom that needs this bike... quick like a bunny!!!

Thanks everyone for all the nice photos and research, got a 1988 (you guys made that part easy) at a thrift store yesterday for $18. Looks like bairly ridden, with one of the two tires being the original. Knew the lugs / chromoly meant a better quality than the normal horrible bikes there. Didn't think it was 30 years old though! May revisit after a while with some pics.

That's when my black stem faded to bronze. And it does look mighty styley in bronze- especially with the "bronze-y" black chrome finish on the frame.

It does look pretty cool. That stem looks exactly like the Nitto MT-5 used on the Cimarron, however I do think the finishes are different. The Nitto seems to be painted (powder coated?) while the stem on the High Sierra seems to be anodized?

I'm usually a lurker so this is my first time posting and I know this has been dead for a bit but since this thread made me wanna buy a Cimarron I wanted to post for once! There's been a Cimarron for sale here on craigslist for weeks and I didn't really pay much attention to it cause I didn't realize how great they are and even though I've been on the prowl for a good quality rigid mountain bike to turn into my commuter and upgrade from the 98 GT Outpost I've been riding I didn't even really look at the little red Schwinn. I can't remember what search brought me to this thread but all of the bikes look amazing and I remembered there's one for sale here for $80!! To close this up I'm basically trying to go pick it up tonight and it's all of y'alls faults Here's the pics from Craigslist for now...

There she is ^^^
A little rough. I think that seat I took off weighed 27 pounds. I'm thinking drop bar and maybe powdercoat. Was gonna leave it stock but now that I have a 88 LE in the works I kinda wanna do something cool with this one and make it my commuter.

Looks like a good project! Nice XT group. The stock paint doesn't look too bad, so I would seriously consider keeping it, but that's your call..

Yea I have'nt written off keeping the stock paint. After I actully clean it up I'll think harder about it. I have a couple of bikes I need to get done before including a 93 Trek 750 that I'm trying to sell.
