Best DIY chainstay protector?
Best thing I have used is a cable sleeve- intended to wrap around cords to keep them organized. Not sure where I got it.
Have also used coil telephone cord- secured w/zip ties.
Better ideas? In colors? Cheap?

I cut a long 1" wide strip of old inner tube and wrap the chainstay - if you take your time it looks tidy and is extremely durable.

My used hardtail mtn bike came with road bike bar tape on it's chainstay and it looks pretty snazzy. My full suspension has built on protection but I filled in some gaps with 3m mastic tape. I've used mastic tape on a few bikes, easier than the inner tube option and I think looks better. My cross bike doesn't see much chain slap so I just have some 3m helicopter tape which you can't even really see.

Some hemp twine that I then shellacked. I had both things sitting around, but it sure wasn't cheap in my time to get the wrap done (or to shellac it to match the bars).

Part of an old inner tube wrapped around the chainstay is whats on my gravel bike, mtb, and one of my kid's mtbs. The other kids mtb has cloth bar tape wrapped around the chainstay.

The old school cloth handlebar tape that the C&V crowd like, only good use I ever found for it. Wrap all the way down and a touch of electrical tape at each end. Lasted 4 years on a cross bike with not worries, will do the same for my next cross bike.

I use cloth handlebar tape ideally but I've used plain electrical tape very successfully too.
One thing I don't see here is protection all the way up. If you're going to wrap, concern yourself with chain suck too, not just slap. Go from the dropout to the bottom bracket.
I suppose you may run into clearance issues if you're already pushing what your bike can handle but I never have.

Try that clear tape that's like a peel and stick. I'm not sure what its called but comes in clear and black. Not sure how long that last but look a bit cleaner that using bar tape IMO.

+1 for and old inner tube wrapped around the chainstay for the most protection; however, On my road bikes I just lay two layers of electrical tape on the top edge and then wrap that with electrical tape. I've been doing that for over 40 years.
I run an inner tube on my mountain bike though. Also have an old cut piece of tire fastened with zip ties to protect my bottom bracket shell of my mountain bike.
