Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

A few things for my S5 build. The Enve cockpit arrives tomorrow but unfortunately, another week before the mini i-links cable set gets delivered.

Jut picked up a SD cable cutter while I was at Performance exchanging my cable guides. The guides are all installed and the bike just has to be fine tuned and cable trimmed.

I also got a set of Spinergy wheels and $1500 at the LBS to get the groupo, seat, stem and bars. They were $1 each so $40 got me a $5K bike. I was thinking either Force and get the rest from them or Ultegra Di2 (cover whatever difference) and get what I can, probably a stem, and use my existing parts (I've got saddles and bars laying around). What do you think?

I am sure there are PLENTY of people that can help you spend 1500 dollars. Ive seen Force groups for about a grand. That's what I'm paying for it anyways. the other 500 will probably go to tires and stuff like that. So I think you've got it figured out quite nicely without spending much if any of your own $....

By the way congrats on the purchase man. Less than 1% of total value spent is a ridiculous win... And it's better than winning a car because there is no insurance needed.

First pics of my PSIMET wheels. HED Belgium C2's laced to silver White Industries, Silver CX-Ray spokes, black nipples, 24/28h, 2x laced. Stealth black PSIMET decals are barely visible opposite the stock decal.

Hope to get them wrapped in rubber and a test spin around the block on the Fuji soon. Then they'll carefully be stored till my Kirk Frameworks arrives in 6-8 weeks.

Nice wheels - after experimenting with a Velocity A23, I'm itching to build up something with the HED C2s.

I'm sure you guys will make fun of me but what the hell I don't mind!

I was on a budget of about $500. My 1970's Motobecane was falling apart so I decided to get a Bikes Direct bike. Hopefully it won't suck too much! It needs to last at least two years till I get out of college and get a real bike!

Bike was $450 so I have $50 let over for accessories. Any recommendations? I have basically nothing.

well, you're gonna need pedals. and preferably a helmet, if there's any $$ left over.

I'm sure that you could do much worse for $450.

If you plan on riding at night, the most important thing would be a tail light. The Planet Bike SuperFlash is good and cheap. If you're going to take some long rides, you'll want cages and water bottles. Figure out the rest as you ride more.

edit - F! Forgot about the helmet.

It actually comes with pedals and I should have mentioned that I do have a helmet! So I'm covered there. I had a Cygolite Hotshot 2 in my Amazon shopping cart. Is the SuperFlash a better choice? And cage is good idea, hopefully one of the water bottles I have will work.

Lol This was a good response.

Only need the will to ride. You did damn good for 450. Seriously. Everything is easily upgradable down the road.

a like-new 808 w/ Vittoria Corsa Evo SC - 450 was an appealing price.

I don't make fun of people who ride bikes. I have been known to chuckle or shake my head in disbelief at people who don't ride bikes. If $450 gets you on the road more then it's a bargain. Congrats.

I decided to repack my headset bearings with fresh grease, but I realized I had no grease. Soo, that meant a trip to the bike shop. I went there and I decided I'd also do something about my ****** brakes (even though my brake pads are amazing, the spring tension on each brake arm is not equal on both sides). I bought a set of Forté team [strike]v-brakes[/strike] linear-pull brakes (v-brakes is a Shimano trademark) for the front. I thought I'd try them out on just the front before I replaced both brakes. I installed them and I loved them! I'm going back tomorrow for another set to put on the rear!
I also got some tubes because:
