I think the Trans Am will have to have a "regular bike" category. Or maybe just make it simply a 2 wheeled human powered vehicle (AKA "bicycle") race. (See if anyone is brave enough to take a 2 wheeled streamliner across the country.)

Yes, it's an interesting dilemma but hats off to Marcel. Someone has to explore the interface between vehicles on different courses and unsupported open road offers some unique challenges for a velo.
As to the two wheel velo/bicycle vs three wheel velo. I wonder how much energy is dissipated on two wheels in maintaining balance at low speeds or hills. A two wheel velo vs safety type bicycle is another match up to see.
I'm honestly curious about how it will unfold.

second place is on an upright bike and he's not that far behind. Not sure I think it really makes sense to have divisions. Wait until the top 10 are all velos.

Peter Andersen is the first upright bike finisher beating Evan Deutsch's record from last year. Lewis, who is in fourth place in the velomobile has a faster moving average but has also spent a lot more time stopped. I suspect they will have categories next year, not that it really matters.

Maybe a simpler option is to just ban fairings. The big advantage of the velomobile is it's aero advantage and as we know, aero makes the biggest difference in bike racing. It can be argued that an unfaired recumbent also has an aero advantage, but it also suffers disadvantages and maybe those will help keep an even race.
