I found a listing for a 2003 Trek 2000 WSD on eBay. It’s the right size, looks to be in good shape. However the price is quite high at $650. I’d be able to pick it up locally so I definitely want to offer a lower price. With the run on bicycles because of the pandemic, what would be a reasonable price to offer if I’m picking up locally? Would $400-$500 be offensively low? Or, even with the surge in bike sales, would that still be considered high?

I have a 1986 Trek 560 ProSeries 49cm that I love but is a tad big for me. A friend absolutely loves her 2000 Trek 2200wsd so this listing got my interest, especially since I’m looking for a road bike. I’m very comfortable with bicycle mechanics so I’m not worried about the cost of taking it to a lbs for a once over.

I sold a flat bar converted 2005 Trek WSD for $360 in Dec 2020. I put on decent levers and shifters, but kept the rest stock.

Note that the bike uses 650c (iso 571) tires which are not very common anymore. The one I had could easily fit the 28c Pasela which are avaiable in 650c. I would of listed it for more if it was 700c tires, but I warned every buyer and some passed due to it.

Alright, thanks for giving a price point to work with. As far as the tires, my single speed runs 650c so if I get a price I like, I’ll probably rebuild the wheels with Velocity a23 rims like my SS. Good to know about the tire width too!

Personally, I would think $450 would be top end for that bike. At least in my area.

Yes - 450 at the big end if everything works well and it needs nothing

there is a caveat - if its truly the bike you want and it fits , especially as this is an odd size, using the small wheels and all, - nobody would ever blame you for paying a little bit more

$450 seems reasonable to me, especially if I can sell that '86 560 (with some newer upgrades) for at least 400 . . . My only other consideration would be this: my friend with the 2001 trek 2200 is most likely going to sell me the bike in a year or so. If I buy this one, can I accept the loss of $50-$100 when I go to resell it . . .

These are rhetorical questions for myself but input is always welcome. Thanks everyone who has replied thus far.

If the demand for used bikes drops by the time you get the 2200, your loss will be greater than what you predict. Used bikes are valued high right now and no one knows when / if they will drop back to pre covid levels.
