Been enjoying the (finally) frozen local MTB trails and doing some hiking, but have not ridden road in over a week. Waiting for some snow to get some camping in, missed out on the snowfall in Dec.

I bit windy so I decided to take advantage of the warmer temps and clean the bike. It hasn't been cleaned since 6 weeks and about 500 miles.

Went to hit the cross trail and found a flat on the bike, turned out the rim strip slid a touch to the side, also turns out my last spare tube in the seat pack was a schrader valve. I get the feeling someone at the last shop put a tube back in the wrong box. Now have a new tube in the tire and a new tube in the seat pack but wasn't smart enough to buy an actual spare. Did 12.5 miles with the oldest 2 yesterday which was nice but really wanted that solo cross ride and bethpage.

Another Spring day... in the middle of January.

The new fenders worked, after 31 miles I was dry and clean.

I've always gone back and forth with fenders. Planned to hit Bethpage but the wife convinced me that it would be too muddy, really wanted to ride cross so I was cool with that, and that there was no wind at the beach. I think she has it out for me. Parked on long beach and worked to hold a 13mph average to Rockaway but once I hit the boardwalk there it just turned into a sufferfest and the average dropped to 11.6mph. Managed to get it up to 16.5 average with the return trip but the legs were obviously getting played out. But still a good ride.

Today as I went over a grade level LIRR crossing I head a noise and noticed the front fender came apart. It's 2 pieces and held to the front fork with velcro straps.. .which came apart. I was able to retrieve the front section that came off and was laying in the road before a car ran over it. I was able to put it back together and finish my ride.

What gets me is the rear is held on with rubber straps that have 2 rows of holes and attach to hooks on the other end... vert secure. While the front uses velcro straps.

The instructions say they are easy to install and easy to remove but I don't plan on removing them so I replaced the (4) velcro straps with double zip ties. This way if one breaks there's a second one for redundancy. I might was to stuff some of the velcro straps in my saddle bag for triple redundancy.

Are those Speedrockers? My previous fenders also used velcro and would come loose as well.

They are, went on a ride yesterday and went over a few pairs of LIRR tracks and jumped a few curbs... pretty solid now. No need to be able to remove and reinstall so zip ties will do the job.

We headed to Edgewood, also great conditions, parking lot packed with cars at 8. Saw a lot more walkers, runners and bikers than I’ve ever seen.

Same true yesterday afternoon, but perfect for a dusk/night trail ride. Bethpage, up the GreenBelt, Tower Loop, bit of the Forbidden Blue Dot. Trails dry/frozen throughout. Incredible full moon came up, can't do it justice with a phone cam though. Unable to repeat tonight but tomorrow morn looks great.

Same ride, but party of 3 instead of solo. Beautiful bright morning, frozen trail gives fantastic traction. It should be like this all winter.

You forgot to mention the NW wind at 15. It was tolerable on a mt. bike at 22, that's a few below my tolerance for the road bike.

And a Happy B-Day !, you old fart.

Roads are clear, just watch for shady spots on turns where there still might be ice.

My only mistake was to use the bike path over Southern State... I wound up walking it since it was a mess with snow/ice/slush. On the way back i took Carmens Road instead.

And yes.. the new fenders are awesome. I was dry and clean after the ride.

Similar ride for me this afternoon. Thanks for the bike path tip. Today I'm over the Moderna Misery and the wild ride of body temp that ensued, and then worked 2 nights, and NEEDED some fresh air. It was very pleasant and I concur the road conditions were much better and drier than I'd have thought.

Glen, I'm impressed that your fender setup sounds like it works well. I've got full SKS fenders for which I've home brewed a semi-quick attach and release system. You can see I have considerably more coverage, but I find that puddles more than an inch or so deep will still result in some minor splish onto my toes, especially if I'm going more than around 15 mph which is basically all the time.

I've augmented the stock SKS front fender with a mudguard or "flyswatter" I made from the narrow side of a plastic motor oil or ATF jug. It cuts down a lot on what might otherwise decorate my shoes.

I was out today... 44* and 41 miles. I already have over 500 miles this year.

Lots of puddles at the intersections, but i arrived home dry and clear.

There were a few people that casused me to slow down since they were tossing snow in the road. When riding west you have to be careful not to ride too close to the curb since it's in the shade and there could be ice.

Joe, did you get your second shot? I'm getting my first in 2 weeks and my wife and kids got their second since they are all teachers.
