Trek announcing "something that will change cycling forever"

Chases Dogs for Sport
This changes CYCLING forever!
I must admit that I'm a little troubled by this. Does this mean I have to wait another 30 years for something THIS revolutionary to come along? (Trek's marketing department is out of control. Please. Make them stop.)

Very much like kids waking up on Christmas morning to discover they got clothing instead of toys.

Woohoo! Stack-of-straws helmets.
Now with different shape straws.
Take that, Smith.

Since they were happy to tout their rating from Virginia Tech, I decided to see if VT discloses their helmet ratings - they do.
To Trek's credit, they do have the top three rated helmets (though one of them is of the MIPs variety, not WaveCel - that can't be terribly flattering) and all of the listed WaveCel helmets are rated 5-star. It's also interesting that all of the top 16 or 17 helmets are all either WaveCel or MIPs.

So my Trek dealer texts me at 9 o'clock tonight to say that I may wish to cancel / hold my Project One Madone SLR order because of Trek's announcement that "A change like this comes along once every 30 years" and this will "change cycling forever". He's heard nothing from Trek but says this is not unusual for big announcements.
Bold Trek Announcement
Well, that's interesting. What do you think? Would you hold off on your order too? I think I will given it'll only be a 3 week delay. Any speculation of what this "something" could be? I'm kind of thinking a new graphene frame (I know this is not a new technology, but it hasn't been produced by a big manufacturer yet).

I remember seeing an "open cell" helmet liner concept like this in a sidebar of Motorcyclist magazine's infamous "Blowing the Lid Off" article, years ago.
I'll give it a long look when I see it in person and I think based on the data it's likely I'll want one. Even though the price point is 2-6x what I want to pay. But their marketing, eesh what a flub.

The marketing really dropped the ball though on this.

Little bit better write up on CT, instead of the gleeful snark and disdain going on in here, for anyone who is interested:
https://cyclingtips.com/2019/03/bont...vecel-helmets/
Seems like they basically took an existing technology and slightly improved on it. Obviously, it seems overhyped now, but I'm definitely interested in a safer helmet, will be interested to see how it grades out in different aspects.

but but but ... is it aero?
and ... it's HEAVIER.
Medium Specter Wavecel, 341g
Medium Velocis MIPS, 266g
seems like a 'let's get around patent licensing by developing our own' hoopla. extreme meh.

The VT page tells a different story, however. There are tons of helmets that get a 5 star rating. And if you look at the “score”, their MTB helmet and commuter helmet are closer to the 4 star end of the spectrum. The Ballista MIPS scores better than the XXX wavecel. So based on the VT tests, Wavecel is a solid option, but by no means head and shoulders above the competition. So double fail.

Honestly a bit overblown on the marketing aspect, but interesting technology nonetheless.
My only real objection to getting a helmet like this is ventilation. Looks like the wavecel layer would mostly / totally cut off airflow to the head? I would be interested to see some independent reviews come out. I ride in 95F degree weather in the summer, so ventilation is key!
As a rider who has struggled with Concussions in the past (non-cycling related), I applaud this innovation! I might be in the market for one of these when some reviews are available.

The pricing seems arbitrary and cruel. Even the $150 ones seem expensive and then there's no obvious reason the $300 ones are better.

If one looks at the Virginia Tech website there are several 5-star rated helmets that are priced well under $150 (the cheapest Bontrager WaveCel).
p.s. with all that corrugated material in there I also wonder how these helmets are in the heat.
Can someone push this thread off the cliff? Let it crash without a helmet.

I am actually an early fan of hardshell helmets and an early MIPS user. I think this is good. But the exclusive rights bit bothers me. MIPS was made available to all who wanted to use it and now all the major manufacturers make MIPS helmets. I'm going to be watching whether Trek/Bontranger makes this available to all or decides to restrict this good to just those who want to support their stockholders.
