Aha, now that the renovations are over at the house, I have a new use for it. Thanks for the idea.

Well I better make some progress on my McLean soon. The new crankset might work, and the new front derailleur better work. I have two bikes at the weekend home, and neither is road ready now. The only bike I can ride is the tandem, and that also has problems with the front derailleur.

I finally changed out the chainrings on my Bianchi Forte MTB today. The Bio-Pace rings on it were in decent shape, but heavy as heck (obviously steel), and dirty as heck. I didn't bother cleaning those, lol, but did a quicky clean on the crank arms. 👍

I was going to change brake levers too, but the Tektros I was going to use, only fit 2 of my fingers comfortably, so I tweaked the old Exage levers a bit, and they're great now. The Exages fit 3 fingers well, and apparently I like that more than I knew. 😉

As a bonus, I readjusted my brake cables, and now they work REALLY well, compared to before. 😎

Pulled every thing off the back end of my Silverado the other day and rebuilt the back half of the frame. Back in full service now.

I've had some 7400 wheels without skewers for some time and had no luck trying to trade Campy SR skewers for some Dura Ace. 7400 skewers don't often show up and when they do, they are pricey. Today, I got an ok deal on these skewers that came with hubs laced to promising rims. Now what? I think I still need skewers!

The Skewers

The skewers were in these hubs

The skewers came with these Matrix Tubulars

This one caught my eye at the co-op, and I had to have it... Been working on getting it right, and I think I have it now. 1984 trek 890.
Inital build from the co-op. Was nice, but still felt off.

Better.

Thank you! I do love this bike now that it’s finished.

The brakes are Shimano 105 5800 — picked them up from Chain Reaction during a big sale, and they’re much better than the original Aero Gran Compes (which I have tucked away).

For the cable stop, I had a spare incomplete set of Symmetric shifters that I butchered for this purpose. The drive side had a protrusion that needed to be removed with a hacksaw, and then the internals needed to be tapped to M5x0.8 so I could mount standard cable stops. Again, I have the original Symmetrics tucked away.

You also asked about the handlebar bag — it’s a vintage Cannondale.

You know, I’m not attuned enough to give a detailed review of tires, but I have no complaints about these. They’re light enough that I don’t notice them, grippy enough for confident descents, and reasonably puncture resistant (knock wood). I recall running over some bits of glass on my last ride, and they are still fine.

Setting up my recently acquired Scott Super Brakes. Hoping the S bend in the front cable housing won't affect brake performance, but if it does, the cool factor makes up for it 😉

I thought I was going to finish up my 1992 Trek 950 but ran into a problem as the pulley needed to make the FD work (cables run on the top tube and this is a bottom pull FD) has gone MIA,

I'll need to make a command decision on whether to continue with a bottom pull FD or go with a top pull and mount a cable stop on the seatube. I'm leaning towards getting a cheap Altus FD with dual pull and a cable stop since that will give me cleaner cable routing than sticking with a bottom pull FD and a pulley.

From what I recall, Trek Singletracks didn't use a pulley; they used a bottom bracket mounted bolt (pic2) and the housing pulled the cable. The housing stop goes in the cable fixing bolt and the cable clamps and ends on the bottom bracket bolt. Or at least, that's what I remember.

Started the teardown on the yellow ss today. Stem and post both bottomed out then seized. Pb blaster and 6hrs the stem came out. Everything else came apart EXCEPT the seatpost. How much heat can I use without doing frame damage? I tried my heat gun but didn’t work. Kevin

You may be right. This is how the bike came to me. The FD is not moving down to the little chainring, though, once I attach the derailleur cable. It will do it once I unscrew the cable so the friction from the bolt around which the cable turns up is preventing full movement of the FD.

I could get a cross clamp with a pulley like this:

https://www.modernbike.com/product-2...xoCCf4QAvD_BwE

Or I could get a dual pull FD and a cable stop for the seat tube like this and this:

https://www.modernbike.com/shimano-a...ont-derailleur

https://problemsolversbike.com/produ...ackstop_-_1282

I think I'm going to go with the cheap altus FD and the cable stop. Running a top pull FD will be a much cleaner run for the derailleur cable.

I never thought I would do this , I needed to change the FD cage . I know crazy right ? This first shot is the bent cage and the new one installed .

IMG_0435 by mark westi, on Flickr

This is the part I made , I did not have the resources to make and press on the brass bush . The part is made from 303 stainless steel ( it's soft ) . On the right is the old part .

IMG_0434 by mark westi, on Flickr

Here it is and ready to install on the Bianchi . The Bianchi is almost done save for a SR crank set . This bike is turning out pretty good , and with a few Titano parts it will be sub 22 #'s .
