Do I have the handlebar a lot lower than it should be?

Hey guys,

I understand that not having our bikes totally set to our needs can cause problems in the long run.

I dont ride my bike excessively, but I did about 3000 kms last year in about 3 months. I had to give up cycling due to some minor health issues after that and I want to get back to it again.

I was just wondering if someone could give me his/her opinion on this matter: do I have the handlebar fairly low on my hybrid? The saddle is way above the line between the saddle and the handlebar. I dont find it comfortable riding the bike this way. I'll have it fitted next week, but I'd really like to know what you think.

Thanks a lot!

Riding a hybrid really calls for a more upright riding position. MHO, it's way too low.

Sit on the bike, against a wall, and hold your hands and arms where they will be comfortable...... again, MHO, but, that's where they should be!

Yeah. I had an idea that this was happening. I think I am leaning forward too much on this bike. I'll just get a bike-fitting done on it next week. Thanks a lot for your reply.

It does look a bit high, though the angle you took the photo from could make it look higher than it actually is. Why don't you just lower it yourself and experiment, then you'll have some background knowledge when you go for a fitting.

I prefer my bars about 2" above saddle height, but that's because my C2 vertebrae is permanently damaged and it's painful to ride with lower handlebars. It does cost me some efficiency, especially wind resistance, but I'm not concerned about that. I'm not fast and enjoy riding more with the bars at a comfortable height.

I've seen folks riding hybrids with flat or slight riser bars at or even slightly below saddle height. If it's comfortable to you and you feel like you're riding efficiently and you're not experiencing any pain or injuries, it's the right height for you.

It looks like you only have 1cm of crown left. If you want it higher, you'll need a new stem.

If it's uncomfortable then you've answered your own question. Some like leaning over and some hate it. It's all preference.

It might cost you speed to sit up more but if it keeps you on the bike then it's completely worth it IMO.
