Where I live September and October can be the hottest months of the year. In addition, the 6 months or so of no rain makes it the ugliest time of year; vegetation is brown and stressed, sky's hazy. Probably my least favorite time of year.

The bike shop group rides are switching from road to gravel next month. Had a great time on the road rides. Looking forward to fall rides which will run until it snows, maybe late November or early December.

My favourite time of the year to ride single track trails on my mountain bike. Cooler temps are nice and all the bugs and mosquitoes are gone, I can enjoy the forest without getting eaten alive by bugs.

last two weeks in september to first two weeks in november fave two months of the year for riding here in the west.
deserts starting to cool down and are semi/tolerable early. mountains still warm enough at higher elevations.
plenty of daylight to still be had. crowds are gone. so are the bugs.

Meh. When I had my sailboat I looked forward to the autumn winds on the bay. The fall is great sailing season in the SF Bay Area. Windy season on the bike... not so enjoyable. One of my route choices heading home is along the SF Bay Trail, but the afternoon winds can be soul crushing. I’m not ready yet, but soon I’ll be plodding the bike lanes through Alameda to avoid the heavy blow.

What is this autumn you speak of? Is that those two weeks of nice temps between summer and winter? I am just glad the highs will only be in the low 90's for the next week.

I spent a year or so in Oregon and yes, autumn is actually a thing. It's pretty cool.
(Pun not intended, but deliberately left intact.)
Anyway, I'll check back in when something that feels like autumn shows up around here.

Great time to ride trails here in NH, not so great to ride the roads. We draw a lot of "leaf peepers" and they are looking at the trees, not the road a lot of the time, but it's a nice time of year to be on the bike.

Although it can get very hot, unlike other parts of the country, temperature on the west coast are generally mild so there's no need to wait until Autumn to enjoy the outdoors.

Last week or so of August through to whenever snow/ice stays on the ground -- usually sometime in December, sometimes earlier -- is my favourite time for riding round here.

Temperatures and humidity have eased off, and I'm ok with 'cold' down to about -5C or so. The other thing: roads and trails are 'clean', leaves aside. Spring weather can be nice here, but everything is filthy from the accumulated grime of winter. By the time the mess has been washed away by rain it's usually 'summer' > hot (ok) and humid (not so ok).

Yeah, going to do a century this Tuesday, last warm morning and upper 80° day for us I think.

I've been staring at my old Panasonic with 27" tires, probably going to swap in my 700c wheelset with wide tires and start into gravel now.

Exactly this! The only downside being the eventual fallen leaves make even the simplest trail exciting

Fall temps are nearly ideal here, but the days are too short for after work rides.
