Cervelo Unloved
Newbie here... Back on my bikes after "many" years and my first post on this forum.
To give you some idea I just completed rebuilding my Holdsworth Special and I originally built in 1979.
I'm in the mood for a new bike, but want to delay that until I get some miles in on my old Holdsworth.
On to my question.....
My short list of bikes contains Cervelo, but reading here, I see references to those being owned by Doctors, Baristas, and various other miscellaneous trades.
So why are Cervelo owners being type cast?
Or more importantly, is there a perceived issue with the Cervelo bike itself?
Please help save me from myself if I'm making a mistake.
No... I won't be telling you what I do for a living.
Thanks

I love my Cervelo, which is a 2012 RS (as close to an entry level model one could get at the time)) I've had now for 7 years and it's been dependable the whole time. I'd strongly consider a Cervelo again when I retire it. I don't know when that will be as it still meets all my needs for a #1 road bike.

Get a bike that you like and one that fits properly. The percieved typecasting/stereotyping, etc., is not important. You are an adult, correct?

No matter what bike you pick, you will be able to find someone who will talk it down.
Who cares? Try it and see if you like it. If you're worried about social image, get a yacht.

Am I qualified to own Cervelo?
YES in years I am old enough to be deemed "adult" (55)
I own a reasonable sense of humor that only needs new bearings to give me many more years of service.
I not taking the brand thing to heart.
I really Really Really want a new bike. But the sensible thing to do is to put miles on my existing ride to find out what I like and don't about its current fit.
Who knows, maybe I'm just too old to ride a new bike! You know, old dog, new tricks.
If the shifters aren't on the downtube will I even be able to find them.
I've looked, they must be there some place.
However...... If a Cervelo is going to get me a ribbing at a local ride, I just would like to know why and if I deserve it.
I never shy away from a good joke, even if it is on me.

I've never noticed Cervelo's per se being type cast, but I've seen a number of posters here type cast any bike more expensive than theirs as an extravagant waste of money.
Fwiw, I'm already judging you for having a nicer vintage steel bike than me, so your Cervelo better come up cheaper than my Ridley.

You can get a reasonably priced 105-equipped Cervelo, though!
that's why S-Works got big- there's no mistaking that you're rich if you have one of those things.

Brands
Italian, American, there is only one place!
I'm English, with an English Holdsworth Special that I built in 1979. It came with me to the SF Bay Area in 1989 and 40 years on I just rebuilt it.
I love that bike. It's always lived in the house. No garage good enough for my bike.
Whatever new bike I buy, it will be a downgrade to the one I have 8-)
But I guess I can suffer through having a newer & non-English ride.
What surprised me was the electronic shifting. I can't imagine having to charge a bike in order to use it.
Don't get me wrong, I'm tech compatible, I have to charge my car in order to drive it.... but a bike!

The way it's done here is you purchase a new Madone for a bargain price, then return it because ???? On the chance that you are actually shopping, I have noticed that in my group various S Works have indeed displaced Cervelo in the past year or two. Why that would matter to anyone is another question.

I don’t dislike Cervelo, but I won’t own a bike from any of the large manufacturers, e.g., Cannondale, Trek, Specialized, or brands like Cervelo that have a large presence where I live. In the Sacramento area, seems like everyone is riding an S Works, Madone, or some kind of Cervelo. I am a snob when it comes to road bikes. I prefer Italian made, preferably steel with campy jewelry. Mountain, adventure, fat doesn’t matter as long as it’s not aluminum. I know I am sick, but it’s my $$$.

you're behind time pal. Doctors, dentists, lawyers are buying Italian these days, ie, Pinarello, Colnago, Wilier, Divo, De Rosa, with Lightweight wheels. If it's American, then it's something custom like Firefly.
Cervelo, Trek, Specialized, Cannondale, Giant are boring af for laymen.
