One night I rode past a doe deer and three fawns. They were in a yard in the suburbs. I was on the close side of the road. As I rode by the doe moved over to be between me and the fawns. As I passed close she started stomping the ground and kind of snorting. Sounded like a horse. She was pissed. I did not wait around to see what would happen.

They are not protected anywhere I know about except in bird sanctuaries.
There are generous limits placed upon the hunting of them.
Goose is very good but not everyone's cup of tea.
My B.I.L. hunts them and gets a butcher to process the meat.
As said the smoked meat is delicious.
A slathering of mustard and voila,
a great smoked meat sandwich.

I ran up on some Geese on a greenway right after a down pour. They were all right in the middle. The head Goose bowed up and spread his wings and was hissing seriously. I stopped immediately. The other geese went to the side and started eating leaves from the bushes. The head goose got to the edge and I made my break for it. He was hissing the whole time but there was enough separation between us for me to "flee". I do not want to hurt any wildlife. They have to live also. Ti's our responsibility to make sure they are safe.

They are classified as a migratory waterfowl, (yeah, I know...) and as such, hunting seasons and bag limits are the subject of international treaties. Or so I've been told.

I have a nice pond, and every year a pair or two try to take over my yard. Unfortunately for them, grass grows quickly in the spring and I'm driving my noisy mower all over the place every day. Sometimes 3-4 times a day in the same spots. They get no rest. They eventually give up and find a quieter place to poop everywhere.

BTW, we've all seen pics of the squirrel in the front wheel. Where's the pic of the goose?

A few years ago my town hired one of those Border Collie goose control services to harass the geese into crapping elsewhere.

The company I worked for had a pond in front that was used both as part of the air conditioning system heat exchange and as an emergency water source in case of a fire. The geese thought it was wonderful in the winter since it stayed warm due to the heat exchangers but the maintenance people didn't appreciate having to clean the pond so often. They installed some plastic swans to discourage the geese but at one point they attracted some real swans.

Back in the NW burbs of Chicago, some places bought pairs of swans to put in their ponds to chase off the geese.
From what I was told, the swans were quite expensive.
So that led to a new problem: Swan-napping, ie stealing a pair of swans for your pond.

I've had good luck practicing my dog barks. Wild dogs or coyotes are about the only predators geese have around here*, so when I start barking they'll usually retreat.

*Except during goose season, obviously, but you can't legally discharge a gun within a certain distance of a building, which rules out killing them on the roads or MUPs in town.

Clearly, there is a better class of geese in these parts. I have found them to be friendly and peaceful birds. I've even shared a bite to eat with them where they ate out of my hand. The video is a good example of fine social birds. Maybe their behavior reflects how they are perceived and treated. Here we leave them alone.

They are all mostly like that... Until they aren't.

Their attitude gets quirky when they have their babies around which was the last 2 months. Their percieved threat level is much higher then and like squirrels and pigeons, some are more used to human interaction than others.

Canadians should know...

Though no longer protected in Canada, Canada geese are protected in the U.S. under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (1918) (with several updates, 1956 1978), which is enforced by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Why we protect them, I cannot fathom. It's time to send them all back to Canada...

In my area, it is illegal to feed them, both to control the mess when large numbers of birds congregate in parks expecting handouts, and to limit the spread of avian cholera, which has been pervasive here for several years.

Canadian, eh? Keep a couple hockey pucks in your pocket to throw at those pesky geese. They'll chase the pucks, and let you continue on your way.

Yeah. Plenty of turkeys here also. A while back there was a small group of them parading back and forth in front of the police station, flaunting their disregard for law and order.
