Latest in brakes

Bike tech has changed (again). Disc brakes are now out, rim brakes are now in. So you need to buy new wheels (of course) with “Zipp’s ShowStopper™ textured braking surface”. Read all about it at the link below, and for goodness sake stop adding “set” to everything! Like “hubset”?! Give me a break!

Bike junk advertising

I wonder how long that sidewall keeps its texture. (And also how long it keeps its texture in the Pacific NW? With our very abrasive dust, that is an entirely separate question.)

On HGTV they call every room a "space," bonus points when it's a bathroom or a closet

I like the spokeset on those Zips. Do they include a skewer Set?

Haven't textured braking surfaces been around since at least the 1960's on steel rims?

Probably running out of ideas. R&D had to come up with something before boss found out their playing video games all day.

It's an interesting idea, isn't it? I've never ridden carbon rims, but aren't they sometimes a little bit slippery?

But disc brakes do not ruin obscenely priced carbon rims. And without brake surfaces a disc brake rim can be lighter stronger and more aero.

Yeah, I had wondered about that. Maybe there's a market though, of riders with rim brake frames.

Irritates me as well. If a wheelset is a set of wheels, and a brakeset is a set of brakes, why is a headset NOT a set of heads? And what in the heck is a groupset? Just call it a "group" or "gruppo" for gosh sake.

The number of TM symbols used in the marketing copy is over the top.

One sentence has four trademark words in a row.

How about just an old drillium treatment on your rimset.

Planned Obsolescence.

One doesn't want the rims to last 30 years.

They're just writing copy to extract money from dentists (and succeeding, I am sure).

Ultra-light carbon rim brake wheels seem like a rather niche component to me. I'll stick with my wide internal alloy disc brake wheels, and not be afraid to use my brakes.

Its still applying friction to slow you down..

(only novel brake I've seen was in development in Japan , for electric small cars. [on TV, on NHK]

An electromagnet activated a grease with a lot of Iron in it, thickening the grease,
and gave a controlled stop in foul weather, by having feedback with a computerized anti lock brake system )

won't see that on your UCI regulated race bikes...

...and throwing down 1,480g like it's some kind of featherweight number. My aluminum Kinlin XR31 set, with 20/24 non-butted spokes weighs in at 1,512g. My brakes manage to work without fancy dimples, and my tires don't have tubes in them. Egregiously expensive carbon wheels definitely have a target market-- I'm just apparently not part of it.

Yep. I rebuilt an old Sears three-speed that had been rusting in the neighbor's barn--free for the asking. It had knurled rims. No guessing how old it was.

Yes, actually, you kinda do. Pants and trousers are always plural because they originally were constructed with the legs as separate units. What we have now should probably be referred to as a "pantset"
