My mom recently passed away, found what appears to be a 1984 Trek road bike hanging on the wall, appears to be in decent shape, minus a chain. As I live 2500 miles away, I would typically rent a road bike when visiting (now just my dad) for more than a day or 2, like the idea of having a free option.

Quickly took the attached pictures just before I left, was unable to take it down to check fit, find serial number.



Based on my online research, it appears to be a 1984 Trek series 500, was likely purchase by my brother, who is of similar height, so size should be close.

Would appreciate guidance from any Trek experts regarding the actual year. https://www.vintage-trek.com/images/trek/84Trek_17.jpg suggests it should have a SUNTOUR ARX GT RD-4500 rear derailleur, which appears not to be the case - perhaps a replacement?

At first glance, the bike appears to be salvageable, with minimal investment to get it on the road, other than the chain, a couple of tubes. I'm not crazy about friction shifting, particularly when climbing hills, hesitant to invest in a bike that I may ride a couple of times per year. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Looks in great shape with Campy upgrades all round. Probably just needs some maintenance of the bearings

That bike has a very nice frame with quality lugs & dropouts. I'm guessing there's a 531 sticker on it somewhere. Looks complete with original reflectors & everything. Clean drivetrain with no chain. Maybe somebody was in the process of rebuilding it. Slap some new tubes & tires and a chain on that thing and ride it. Vintage Treks are pretty popular bikes. So, if you want to sell it that will go pretty fast. All cleaned up with new tires ............. $325.

Specs say it is Reynolds 501 main tubes Tange mangalloy fork, True Temper stays, Campy Triomphe. Nicr Bike!! if it wondered into my bike room I would keep it.
