Number glue?
I saw these guys sticking the numbers to they're jerseys. Here I am fumbling around with those pain in the ass pins! What glue are they using? Does it leave a residue?

Buy a small can because the nozzle dries after a while, and a small can will last you forever. Spray back of number, wait 10-15 seconds, place on jersey (that you're already wearing).
Keep in mind you should use pins as a back up.

if the nozzle is clogged just hold it upright and spray for a second and give it 10 seconds for the solvent in the spray to liquefy the dried glue. I buy and use the entirety of the huge cans.
It can leave a residue but there is the adhesive remover which destroys the adhesive and doesn't bother fabric.

We wait about 3-5 min so glue is not wet. Wet glue works too, but really sticks.
Works better if you first soften the number then flatten it.
Goo Gone makes a thinner Heavy Duty spray that does not work.
They also make a gel - that does work.
Buy the gel

+1 for Doge's recipe. one problem I ran into the first time is that you need to be careful with the spray because its pretty easy to get your hand covered in glue if you're not paying attention.

Regular paint thinner dissolves Super 77 (3M or Scotch) instantly. Take the number off as soon as you can after the race, the wet jersey makes it easier and if the glue dries and completely sets (after 12-24 hours) it's more difficult wet or dry. Use a stick or other long object to hold number down while spraying, no glue on fingers. 60 to 90 second dry time before attaching number gives a good bond with fairly clean removal. One full size can lasted about 3 dozen numbers.

I use 77 in the shop quite a bit. The thing that dissolves it the best is turpentine. I don't expect I would use that on clothing though (not because of anything other than the smell of turpentine). I suppose I'd consider the 3M adhesive remover or maybe just something like naptha. The thing is, I've been using this glue to stick numbers on since 2008 and have never actually gone through the process of removing it from clothes. Sometimes it does leave a residue, but bike stuff gets washed so often that it just eventually disappears anyway.

doge, I've never seen a spray bottle of Goo Gone let alone the gel. Definitely going shopping this weekend. Damn! One can will last me forever, at six-seven races a year. Or I start racing more. Thanks for all the help dudez

I get it both at Home Depot and a local Tru-Value HW store. I think I purchased at Ace too.
It also gets used to clean bikes, however I'm not thinking it is best for that, it is just what is around.

just one caution re: Goo Gone Gel contains 5% limonene, which will react with ozone to form formaldehyde. Use in a well ventilated area or at least do not use when the atmospheric concentration of ozone is high (e.g. today in the Mid-Atlantic)

As posted in a couple places, junior did a hot RR this weekend and went with pins and air-flow over glue.

I have this injector seal leak on my 200K mile Diesel. It seems to have been going on a long long time. The derbies were caked up something like 100in^3 - a lot.
The shop had no idea how to get rid of it and I convinced them I had the solvents. So they "let" me take my car home. I got to pour all the no longer needed bike goop solvent stuff over it and combined with a screw driver - I amazed the mechanics.
Cycling really can't be all that good for the environment.

Never have a number wrinkle or flap again.
I still use 6 pins but it's way easier to get it perfect now.
1) get number
2) lay number face down on pavement
3) spray glue per instructions
4) slap it on in the perfect spot (clear of pockets, etc)
- assumes you have jersey / ss on already
5) press the number to get a good flat gluing (car door edges are useful for this, or a friend)
6) take off the jersey / ss
7) Pin in place
8) put the jersey /ss back on
9) stretch and flex in the mirror because you've earned it
