Specialized vs Giant

Morning All I am a cyclist in Eswatini formerly Swaziland in Africa.

Not technically gifted but make do our events and riding is marathon / XC 4/5 hr days on 65-70k rides.

I previously owned a Giant Anthem 27.5 and now am looking at upgrading

My Anthem was comfortable stable not the fastest but I enjoyed it. My 13yr old now inherited it.

I am looking at the Evo or the Advance Pro 1 - any suggestion!

ps ! Recreational Rider

The issue I have with Giant, is they use odd (proprietary?) sized components. On my MTB, they have a 30.8mm seat post, which can be difficult to find a replacement.

Specialized has some issues with proprietary components as well. If I ever want to replace the rear shock on my Camber, I'm going to have to also get an adapter because the shock doesn't mount like standard shocks.

Specialized is one of the best brands available on the market. Mostly because of ads. If you go with either of them you will not get a bad bike.

Specialized is historically pretty bad in this regard. They are notorious for using proprietary sized rear shocks.

Don't know about Specialized but customer service at Giant is pretty bad. Takes days to get a response using website Contact Us. Service at local Giant retailer is not much better.

While not ideal (I'd rather have my seatpost match the bike spec), you can get shims for almost any size: https://www.modernbike.com/seatpost-shims

You can't go wrong with either brand. want local bike shops have told me that almost any mountain bike manufactured in the past few years is going to be good. Fit is extremely important for any bike.

I guess that explains why some MTB’s cost $2000 and some $12000.??? Don’t know why if there’s no difference.

They are all the same really. I wouldn't fuss. Just get whats cheap and fits. Giant is the biggest manufacture of imported bikes...I mean it really doesn't matter.

For what it's worth...just get the bike with the better wheels...because ultimately, the wheelset is far more important than drive train components. Good hubs with good seals. A derailleur is just gonna get beat up, so who cares. But wheels I want stuff that keeps true.
