Worth it to pay 150$ for Crank, Chainring, Bottom Bracket
Hey guys,
I got a deal at my local bike store for a 48 teeth Aluminium chainring, 170cm cranks, and a bottom bracket for 150$.
All their parts are from their own Brand and so far I've only heard good things about them although 150$ sounds pretty expensive to me.
Is it worth it to pay that much money or should I look online for cheaper parts.

But I would look for two things: First is a drive side crank arm, where the arm and the spider are one piece, rather than swaged together. The second is a detachable chain ring with a commonly available bolt circle diameter (BCD) so you can try a different gearing at some later date. Those things tend to be associated with somewhat more expensive parts. How much more expensive? Don't know.

Go to eBay and type "Track crankset 46t" You'll get a myriad of good cranks ranging from $40 to $200.
The one your shop is selling is probably one of them.
It's not hard to install but impossible without the right tools.

That's a Track crank and requires a 1/8" chain and matching width cog. It will not work on a derailleur bike. Are you installing it on a real track bike or just a road single speed or fixie? Is your cog compatible?

They want to charge $150 for what is likely lesser quality than Shimano's CHEAPEST crankset and BB.
They are taking advantage of you, without a doubt.
You can buy the tools needed for installation, AND better parts for less than $100. Just take your time and make sure you're not cross-threading when installing your BB.
Or, find a shop that is trustworthy. Either way, I'd tell them to "get bent".
* If it's a single speed that you need, expect to pay $30-40 more for a Shimano or Sram crankset. Still a better deal and better quality than some no-name eBay stuff though.

Yes, but stranger things have been tried. 1X drivetrains are all the rage these days so fitting a single chainring crank to a derailleur bike is common. Just not this crank.

I'd want to know what kind of bike this is going on. $200 Wally-world special? Not worth it. Decent bike, say $750 or more new? Might be worth it if the $150 includes installation. $300 new hardtail? Really hard to say.

On eBay, one can buy a nicely finished FSA Gimondi crank with chainring for $70. That leaves $80 (from his legendary "no-name" crank, chainring, bb) for a good Shimano cartridge BB and Park BB installation tool.

In my experience, cranks and chainring prices are all over the place. And, it's pretty hard to tell the difference in one from another with the limited amount of information provided. I'm really not sure why one chainring sells for $25 and another is $150. The two brands that I've actually been able to get good deals on are FSA and Vuelta. And, sometimes you can get a good deal on some older model Shimano stuff on ebay. Most of the other brands I've looked at are too high priced for me to justify using them on my bikes.

Throwing "old French" into the mix further complicates things. The bottom bracket threading is likely not compatible with whatever bottom bracket is included in that kit.
