Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

The original swanky dropout (or track end if you are particular). I have a set of these waiting for a frame.

Ones that face forward with a derailer hanger.

I still don't get the point of rear facing "track ends." Why are they better than the old horizontal dropouts on geared bikes?

On an actual track bike, should the axle ever slip, it will just go forward instead of whole wheel popping out of the dropouts.

Don't you mean this?
I've been riding my buddies old bianchi roadie and I get around so much quicker, especially at that one stretch of flat road where I can sprint in the highest gearing; I live in an annexed part of campus.

Very true... if I lived on an annexed part of campus (or a few miles off-campus) that'd be ideal. However, I only use my bike on the main part of campus (or sometimes short off-campus trips) so a fixed gear is ideal for dodging between people walking haphazardly.
