Rotor disk renewel? How to tell?

My rear rotor disk seems a bit noisy, a groaning type noise. My old pads had worn down to the metal backing plate and i wondered if that has affected the rotor and rapidly worn the rotor disk out prematurely. They are avids, if that matters.

Buy new pads and a new disc, they are all fairly low cost.

Replaced rotor disk, and the groanings stopped. The pads have only done 2 rides, so i'll keep them as they are. I guess that groaning noise is the indication that the rotor needs replacing, its hard to tell just by look or touch, without a micrometer. Thanks
